{"id":22989,"date":"2017-05-08T10:00:28","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T14:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/?p=22989"},"modified":"2023-02-13T01:43:58","modified_gmt":"2023-02-13T06:43:58","slug":"raise-or-promotion-software-developers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/raise-or-promotion-software-developers\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Get a Raise or Promotion for Software Developers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: initial;\">M<\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"color: initial;\">any software developers erroneously think that if they get a good review, they\u2019ll get a raise or promotion.<\/strong>\\n\\nWhile sometimes this is the case, it\u2019s usually not.\\n\\nMore often than not, when <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/career-advice-for-software-engineers\/\">advising those vying for a better position<\/a>, I hear wannabe-highly-paid Software Engineers tell me about how they got the highest marks they could, yet a raise or promotion \u201cjust wasn\u2019t in the budget.\u201d\\n\\nOr worse yet\u2014ok, maybe not worse, but more insulting\u2014they get a <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/underpaid-as-a-programmer\/\">peanut-level pay<\/a> raise of a few measly percent that doesn\u2019t even keep up with inflation.\\n\\nYes, it\u2019s important to ace your review, but <strong>just acing your review alone won\u2019t get you that big raise or promotion you are after.<\/strong>\\n\\n<a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/10-powerful-strategies-for-success\/\">You\u2019ll have to be a bit more strategic<\/a> and plan things out a little more carefully if you really want to make the big bucks.\\n\\nAnd that is what this chapter is about, making the big bucks.\\n\\nWell maybe not about making the big bucks, but getting a hefty raise or promotion\u2013\u2013one to write home to your mom about.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2>Always Choose Responsibility Over Pay<\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22993\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/To-The-Top-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"727\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/To-The-Top-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/To-The-Top-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/To-The-Top-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/To-The-Top-1.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" \/>\\n\\nBefore we can talk about how to get a raise or promotion, let\u2019s talk about whether you should go for a raise or a promotion.\\n\\n<strong>Which is better: more money or a bigger title?<\/strong>\\n\\nMore moolah or more responsibility?\\n\\nIt seems like an obvious answer, right?\\n\\nI\u2019ll take the cash, Bob.\\n\\nBob, SHOW ME THE MONEY!\\n\\nBut, no. That&#8217;s actually the wrong answer.\\n\\nSee, it\u2019s like this.\\n\\nI\u2019ve only watched two episodes of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00BC5I6Q2\/makithecompsi-20\">House of Cards<\/a><\/em>, but I remember that the main character\u2014I believe he\u2019s played by Kevin Spacey\u2014said something that was so true.\\n\\n\u201cSuch a waste of talent. He chose money over power\u2014in this town, a mistake nearly everyone makes. Money is the McMansion in Sarasota that starts falling apart after 10 years. Power is the old stone building that stands for centuries.\u201d\\n\\nIt\u2019s the same thing with responsibility.\\n\\n<strong>Responsibility is power<\/strong>, for all intents and purposes.\\n\\nThe thing is, if you chase responsibility, money will follow.\\n\\n<strong>You can always trade responsibility\u2014read: power\u2014for money.<\/strong>\\n\\nThink of it this way: would you rather get a job at a Fortune 500 company where you get paid what a CEO gets paid, or get paid what the janitor gets paid but get the actual title of CEO?\\n\\nIn the short term, the money makes sense.\\n\\nBut <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/unemployment-developer\/\">what happens after you lose that job?<\/a>\\n\\nYou can try and tell the next janitor job you apply for that you were making $300,000 a year at your last job, but they\u2019ll just laugh at you.\\n\\nYet, if you\u2019ve been the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, imagine how you could parlay that into cash at a later date.\\n\\nThe point is that when you&#8217;re going after something, you need to be going after positions of power, which roughly translates to more responsibility.\\n\\n<strong>Take every opportunity you can to be put in charge of something<\/strong>, even if it&#8217;s a shit job.\\n\\nIt doesn\u2019t matter.\\n\\nYou want to grow and expand your fiefdom by gaining more and more responsibility.\\n\\nLook for some undeveloped swampland that no one wants to touch, take it over, get your hands dirty, and build a theme park out of it\u2014heck, that\u2019s what Walt Disney did.\\n\\nFind those areas that no one wants, those projects that no one will touch, and take them over. Then, make them shine.\\n\\n<strong>I promise you, if you keep getting promoted and increasing your responsibility within any organization, the pay will eventually catch up with you.<\/strong>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2>Take Initiative<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-22994 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Take-Initiative.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"353\" height=\"353\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nSome people seem to think paying your dues means that you clock in and clock out every day, day after day, and get your work done, then after some magical amount of time, the \u201cdues fairy\u201d will strike you on the head with the \u201cdues wand\u201d and you\u2019ll suddenly be rewarded for your efforts.\\n\\nNope. Sorry, it don\u2019t work that way, brah.\\n\\n<strong>If you want to get a raise, if you want to get that promotion, you gotta do more\u2014much more\u2014than what is asked of you.<\/strong>\\n\\nYou\u2019ve got to go out there and make things happen, not wait for things to happen to you.\\n\\nIt\u2019s called taking initiative.\\n\\nLet those other people in the diner patiently wait for the ketchup to come out of the bottle. I\u2019m gonna stick a straw in the bottle and suck that ketchup right out of there.\\n\\nThe point is <strong>a promotion or raise is not going to come to you because you simply deserve it.<\/strong>\\n\\nYou&#8217;re going to have to get out there and be aggressive.\\n\\nYou&#8217;re going to have to tell your boss that you want to get a raise or promotion.\\n\\nYou&#8217;re going to have to actively take steps to get what you want.\\n\\nYou have to make your own opportunity.\\n\\nMost of the rest of this post will focus on ways you can do that.\\n\\nWays that you can not just sit at your desk and do your work, and even do a good job of it, but to do more, to become more.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2>Invest In Your Education<\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nOne of the first initiative-taking things you can do is to invest in your education.\\n\\n<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLjwWT1Xy3c4W7aRN5cCCZ90AIDYoLpqVa\">When was the last time you read a book?<\/a><\/strong>\\n\\nI suppose if you got this far in this post, you&#8217;re probably one of the overachievers in this area, or I\u2019m an extremely awesome and entertaining writer and you just can\u2019t wait to see what I am going to say next.\\n\\nHint: it\u2019s the second one.\\n\\nBut, seriously,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/2015\/03\/23\/the-ultimate-list-of-programming-books\/\">buy some books<\/a> and read them.<\/strong>\\n\\nAlways be reading some kind of technical book, every single day.\\n\\nI used to read a technical book for 30 minutes a day.\\n\\nI\u2019d call this \u201ctreadmill time,\u201d because I\u2019d do it while walking on a treadmill.\\n\\nDon\u2019t just read books, but do online courses\u2014and actually complete them.\\n\\nAttend seminars or conferences or live training classes.\\n\\nGo back and complete your degree, or get another degree.\\n\\nHire a <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/coaching\">personal career coach<\/a> to mentor you.\\n\\n<strong>Don\u2019t be afraid to spend some money to make more money.<\/strong>\\n\\nI\u2019ve heard it said that 10 percent of what you make, you should reinvest in yourself as personal development.\\n\\nI\u2019m not sure if I invest 10 percent exactly, but <strong>I\u2019ve invested tens of thousands of dollars in my personal development over the years.<\/strong>\\n\\nNot only will all of this make you more valuable and more effective, but a marked increase in education is one of the most effective bullets in the \u201cgive-me-a-raise\u201d gun.\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: var(--g-regular-weight, normal); color: initial;\">If your boss asks why you should get a raise or promotion and you say, \u201cWell, when you hired me I had an eighth grade education, but now I have my Ph.D.,\u201d it\u2019s pretty difficult to argue that you aren\u2019t worth more money or deserve a title upgrade.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2>Make Your Goals Known<\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22995\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Make-Your-Goals-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"718\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Make-Your-Goals-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Make-Your-Goals-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Make-Your-Goals-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Make-Your-Goals-1.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 718px) 100vw, 718px\" \/>\\n\\nI used to practice what is called covert communication.\\n\\nThis was my basic strategy.\\n\\nSuppose I wanted you to do something for me. I wouldn\u2019t say to you, \u201cHey, I\u2019d really like to have some of that Kit Kat bar you have there. Can you snap me off a piece?\u201d\\n\\nNope, instead what I would do is this: I\u2019d go \u201chumph.\u201d\\n\\nThen\u2014in a masterful stroke\u2014I\u2019d sigh and look at you, making my eyes just slightly bigger.\\n\\nIf you still didn\u2019t get the message, I\u2019d humph again.\\n\\n<strong>Guess how effective this covert communication strategy was?<\/strong>\\n\\nPretty much zero effective. All it would do is piss people off.\\n\\nOften people would know what I wanted\u2014that tasty, crunchy Kit Kat bar\u2014but they\u2019d often ignore me just to spite me.\\n\\n<strong>If you want something, ask for it.<\/strong>\\n\\nWhen I sold my book, I didn\u2019t beat around the bush and try to drop hints that you should buy my book.\\n\\nNo, I said, \u201cThis is a fucking awesome book! Buy it now! It\u2019s fucking awesome!\u201d\\n\\n<strong>If you want your boss to give you a raise or a promotion, just ask for it.<\/strong>\\n\\nJust say \u201cHey dude, look man, I\u2019ve been here a while and guess what, man? I want a raise dammit. Give me a raise.\u201d\\n\\nWell, don\u2019t put it quite that way, but tell your boss directly, in no uncertain terms, that you want a raise or a promotion and it is your goal to get one.\\n\\nOh, and you do this BEFORE the review\u2014well before the review.\\n\\nNot during, not after.\\n\\n<strong>I promise you, the raise or promotion is mostly decided well before you sit down for the formal review.<\/strong>\\n\\nIn fact, many times the entire review process is a sham designed to give the person who has already been slotted for that raise or promotion that raise or promotion.\\n\\nYou don\u2019t have to ask for the raise or promotion right away. In fact, don\u2019t do this.\\n\\nInstead, plant the seed.\\n\\nTell your boss that what your goal is.\\n\\nTell him what you plan to do to achieve the goal.\\n\\nAsk him what else you need to do or what he would suggest for you to reach this goal by your next review.\\n\\nIf he says \u201cit\u2019s not possible\u201d respond with, \u201cif it were possible, or if there were only a small chance and it required a huge effort, what would I need to do?\u201d\\n\\nIf you can get him to answer that question and you can do whatever herculean task he asks you to do, you&#8217;re going to get the raise, buddy\u2013\u2013and then you&#8217;re going to take me out for a nice steak dinner.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2>Make Yourself Valuable Outside Your Company<\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22996\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Phone-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Phone-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Phone-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Phone-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Phone-1.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/>\\n\\nOne of the best ways to increase your value inside a company is to <strong>increase your value outside the company.<\/strong>\\n\\nThere is only so much you can do to build your brand and reputation inside your current company and position.\\n\\nIn fact, it\u2019s often difficult to change first impressions and to grow inside a company.\\n\\nIt\u2019s kind of like how your family will always see you as that goofy 11-year-old version of yourself no matter how old you are.\\n\\nThe solution is to <strong>get out there and market yourself: build your personal brand.<\/strong>\\n\\nYou want to create some sense of external pressure where your employer realizes how valuable you are because other people, outside the company, realize how valuable you are.\\n\\nWhen your boss hears you on a podcast, sees that you\u2019ve published a book, or hears someone else talking about an article you wrote, your value goes up.\\n\\nYou are finally not that goofy 11-year-old kid.\\n\\nI\u2019ve actually found learning how to market yourself so important that I built an entire course called <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/store\/products\/how-to-market-yourself\">How to Market Yourself as a Software Developer.<\/a>\\n\\nIn general though, you want to do things that are going to increase your reputation and overall notoriety in the software development industry, especially in your particular specialty.\\n\\n<strong>If people outside your company think you are valuable, people inside your company will think you are valuable<\/strong>, and it will be much easier to get that raise or promotion.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2>Become An Asset<\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<strong>If you can prove to me that you can make me more money than it costs to have you on my payroll, I\u2019ll hire you on the spot.<\/strong>\\n\\nMost smart employers would\u2014it\u2019s just common sense.\\n\\nYet, many software developers forget that the primary reason they are being paid a salary at all is not <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/smartest-person-room-knowing-leave\/\">because they are smart<\/a> or because of the skills they have, it\u2019s because they make their employer money. Moolah.\\n\\nYou need to make the company money.\\n\\n<strong>If you want to get paid more money, the equation is pretty simple: make the company more money.<\/strong>\\n\\nAs an employee, it\u2019s easy to get disconnected from the business world and economics of the company you are working for and forget that ultimately you are part of and contribute to the bottom line.\\n\\nTry and figure out how.\\n\\n<strong>Try and figure out how what you are doing directly impacts the revenue your company makes.<\/strong>\\n\\nThen try and figure out how you can increase that bottom line.\\n\\nWhat can you do that you know is going to make the company more money?\\n\\nI know software developers who figured out a brand new product they could create for their employer. They penned deals where not only did they get a raise, but they got a royalty percentage from the new product.\\n\\nYou have to think outside the box here. Think like an entrepreneur or business person.\\n\\nYou can be an intrapreneur in the company you work for.\\n\\n<strong>When you go in for a raise, the best argument you could possibly make is that you are making the company more money.<\/strong>\\n\\nShow how you increased the bottom line and how much the company is benefiting from your work, and you\u2019ll have a very solid argument.\\n\\nThink of it this way.\\n\\nIf I\u2019m your boss and you walk into my office and you show some compelling evidence that suggests you are making the company $1 million dollars a year in revenue, do you think I am going to refuse your request for a $10,000 raise?\\n\\nMaybe, but it\u2019s much, much less likely.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2>Ask For A Specific Number<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-22997 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Depositphotos_42288161_l-2015-1-1-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Depositphotos_42288161_l-2015-1-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Depositphotos_42288161_l-2015-1-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Depositphotos_42288161_l-2015-1-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Depositphotos_42288161_l-2015-1-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Depositphotos_42288161_l-2015-1-1-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Depositphotos_42288161_l-2015-1-1.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nHere is the thing, if you ask for a raise, ask for a specific number.\\n\\n<strong>Ask for exactly what you want.<\/strong>\\n\\nIt\u2019s very difficult to <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/salary-negotiation-software-developers\/\">negotiate and get what you want<\/a>, when what you want is \u201cmore.\u201d\\n\\nMore sounds greedy.\\n\\nMore is undefined.\\n\\nYour definition of more is different than mine.\\n\\nWhen my wife asks me if I want some more Tollhouse pie, her definition of more is another small slice, mine is the rest of the pie please, oh and put whip cream on top and some ice cream on the side.\\n\\n<strong>Before you even go into your boss\u2019s office to ask for a raise, know exactly what the number you are going to ask for is.<\/strong>\\n\\nDo your homework and calculate what that number is.\\n\\nThen, do more homework and come up with the reasoning and calculations which give you some evidence to support why the number you are asking for is what you should be paid.\\n\\nYou are much more likely to get what you ask for when you are specific and can provide evidence to back up your number.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t Make Threats<\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<strong>One of the worst ways to try to get a raise or a promotion is threaten that you are going to leave.<\/strong>\\n\\nSometimes if you are a key player on a project and the company can\u2019t afford to lose you right now, they\u2019ll give in and meet your demands, but your victory is likely only temporary.\\n\\nWhy temporary?\\n\\nWell, let\u2019s think about a scenario for a minute.\\n\\nSuppose you come into my office and you tell me how if you don\u2019t get a raise <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/how-to-leave-your-software-development-job\/\">you are going to go to this other job<\/a> where they will pay you more.\\n\\nI\u2019m a bit stuck, because I don\u2019t want you to quit on the spot, since I don\u2019t have a replacement for you and you are a critical resource to completing the project on time.\\n\\nBut, I\u2019m a bit annoyed. More than a bit.\\n\\nYou\u2019ve put me in a spot.\\n\\nYou aren\u2019t telling me you deserve a raise because you are more valuable than you were before or based on some other compelling evidence, but instead, you are taking advantage of the bind I would be in if I had to replace a key player on the project this late in the game.\\n\\nSo, I realize that I don\u2019t have much of a choice and reluctantly agree to your demands\u2013\u2013because that is what they are.\\n\\nBut guess what I do?\\n\\n<strong>I start looking for your replacement immediately.<\/strong>\\n\\n<strong>I can\u2019t have someone on my team who I can\u2019t trust.<\/strong>\\n\\nWhen I\u2019m on the front line, I want someone who is watching my back.\\n\\nI don\u2019t want someone who I have to worry about fragging me with friendly fire. That\u2019s not cool.\\n\\nYou\u2019ve moved yourself, in my mind, from the asset category to the liability category.\\n\\nYou are now a liability to the team, and an expensive one at that.\\n\\nWhen you ask for the raise or promotion, just ask for it.\\n\\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ei2i3RaNIjc\"><strong>Don\u2019t make threats<\/strong>, don\u2019t say you are going to leave.<\/a>\\n\\nIf you\u2019ve made yourself valuable outside the company like we talked about, your boss is going to know that refusing your request may very well cause you to look elsewhere.\\n\\nBut there is a huge difference between making a wise business decision and carefully coming to your own conclusion, and being given an ultimatum.\\n\\nNo one likes an ultimatum.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t Talk About Why You Need The Money<\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nI know this is going to seem kind of hard to believe, but <strong>no one cares about your sad sob story or how poor you are.<\/strong>\\n\\nReally, no one cares.\\n\\nThey may pretend to care and toss you a sympathy bone, but underneath it all, they are much more concerned about themselves and their own problems.\\n\\n<strong>You are very unlikely to get a raise out of pity.<\/strong>\\n\\nOf all the reasons to give a raise or promotion to someone, pity is perhaps the lowest.\\n\\nI want to give you a raise because you are doing a kickass job and you are making me money.\\n\\nI don\u2019t want to give you a raise because your neighbor just bought a new car and you realized how old your car is and you\u2019ve been racking up debt and you are barely making it, so you need more money.\\n\\nYet, so many software developers go and ask for raises and when asked why, they talk about how they have a new baby or they just bought a house or some other thing that no one in the world cares about besides themselves.\\n\\nDon\u2019t do that.\\n\\nTalk about the business case.\\n\\nTalk about why you deserve the money, not why you NEED the money.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2>If All Else Fails, Go Elsewhere<\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22998\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Ladder-PNG-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"736\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Ladder-PNG-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Ladder-PNG-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Ladder-PNG-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Ladder-PNG-1.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px\" \/>\\n\\nSo, you\u2019ve executed everything in this chapter to a tee.\\n\\nYou\u2019ve made yourself more valuable, invested in your education, set up the business case for why you should get a raise or promotion, and you\u2019ve even taken on huge amounts of responsibility without even being asked\u2014all on your own initiative.\\n\\nBut, when you ask for a raise or promotion, your pointy-haired boss just says \u201cno.\u201d\\n\\nThat\u2019s ok. At least you tried.\\n\\n<strong>Honestly, the best way to get a raise or promotion is usually to go somewhere else.<\/strong>\\n\\nIt\u2019s true.\\n\\nI advanced my own career more by strategically hopping from jobs than I did just staying in one place.\\n\\nI\u2019m not saying you should become a software developer hobo or transient, but you might strongly want to consider making a move every two or three years to another company where you can get a bigger salary and a better title.\\n\\n<strong>It\u2019s often easier to move up in a company from the outside than it is from the inside.<\/strong>\\n\\nIn fact, I\u2019ve actually left a company, went and worked somewhere else, and then came back to the original company in a much higher position.
