{"id":15062,"date":"2015-11-30T08:00:50","date_gmt":"2015-11-30T13:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/?p=15062"},"modified":"2020-11-24T10:35:44","modified_gmt":"2020-11-24T15:35:44","slug":"software-developer-gifts-and-other-tech-geek-gifts-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/software-developer-gifts-and-other-tech-geek-gifts-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Software Developer Gifts (And Other Tech Geek Gifts) 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Update: <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/gifts-for-programmers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check out the latest 2020 Software Developer Gift list here<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nIt\u2019s that time of year again when I create a new Christmas list for all those programmers and software developers out there who need some help deciding what they want to ask Santa for.\\n\\nIt\u2019s notoriously difficult to buy software developer or programmer gifts, since most girlfriends, spouses, significant others and family members in general have no idea what a good programmer gift is.\\n\\nThat\u2019s why I put together this list every year.\\n\\nYou can either buy some of these gifts for yourself or share it with that special someone who keeps buying you outdated technology\u2013although they mean well.\\n\\nSo, without further delay, here are my software developer gifts, programmer gifts, software engineer gifts\u2026 coder gifts\u2026 whatever you\u2019d like to call them for 2015.\\n\\nI tried to include only new stuff this year or at least updated versions of anything I included last year, but many of the gifts from last year are still relevant.\\n\\n<a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/2014\/11\/17\/top-developer-gifts-tech-geek-gifts\/\">You can check out last year\u2019s gift list here.<\/a>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B01639694M\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samsung 950 PRO SSD<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nI\u2019m starting off with a doozy.\\n\\nI\u2019ve gone all laptop now and no longer have a desktop computer, but this SSD drive is tempting me to build a PC, just so I can put one of these bad boys in it.\\n\\nLast year I recommended the Samsung 850 Pro, because it was so ridiculously fast at about 500 MB\/s, but <b>this things screams at an astounding 2,500 MB\/s read and 1,500 MB\/s write.<\/b>\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B01639694M\/makithecompsi-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B01639694M.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover\" \/><\/a>\\nI can\u2019t even believe how insanely fast that is.\\n\\nPlus, the price is entirely reasonable.\\n\\nThere is a:\\n\\n<\/p>\n<ul>\\n    <\/p>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B01639694M\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">512 GB version<\/a> (I recommend this one)<\/li>\n<p>\\n    <\/p>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B01639694M\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">256 GB version<\/a> (still really good)<\/li>\n<p>\\n<\/ul>\n<p>\\n\\nThere really isn\u2019t a better upgrade for your PC.\\n\\nOh and if you don\u2019t have the M.2 capability on your motherboard, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00MYCQP38\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here is an adapter<\/a>.\\n\\nI\u2019m so sad I can\u2019t buy this.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B016C8779U\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Surface Book<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nIf you know my history, you know that I\u2019ve bought and returned just about every Surface product that Microsoft has made.\\n\\nI\u2019ve been looking for the perfect 2 in 1 to act as <b>both a tablet and a laptop<\/b> and be powerful enough to do everything I want to do.\\n\\nI\u2019m happy to say Microsoft has finally done it.\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B016C8779U\/makithecompsi-20\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15095 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Surface-Book-image-1-e1444134958401.png\" alt=\"Surface-Book-image-1-e1444134958401\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/><\/a>\\n\\n<b>I absolutely love the Surface Book.<\/b> I think this makes an excellent programmer gift\u2013although it can be quite expensive.\\n\\nI\u2019m not going to do a full review here, but I\u2019m typing this article on one myself.\\n\\nI\u2019d recommend going with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B016C8779U\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">i7-6600U 16G 512G NVIDIA GeForce GPU version<\/a>. That\u2019s the one I\u2019m using right now.\\n\\nIt\u2019s a bit expensive, but I think it&#8217;s worth it for the upgrade.\\n\\nI don\u2019t think it&#8217;s worth the price to go <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B016C8779U\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">up to the 1TB drive<\/a>, since there is pretty big price jump there.\\n\\nAnyway, the thing rocks. It has a really good keyboard, ridiculous resolution screen (3000&#215;2000), detachable screen (which acts as a tablet), incredible battery life, touch screen, included pen and it\u2019s a pretty small and light device on top of all that.\\n\\nOh, and you can also play games on the upgraded versions.\\n\\nI\u2019m playing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B016E70408\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fallout 4<\/a> without any problems.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0163HP38W\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Surface Dock<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nIf you have a Surface or a Surface Book or you are shopping for someone who does, this upgrade seems like a no-brainer to me.\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0163HP38W\/makithecompsi-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B0163HP38W.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover\" \/><\/a>\\nBeing able to easily hook up to an external keyboard, mouse, monitor and gigabit Ethernet, really makes things easy.\\n\\nI really like how there is just one cable to connect for power and the other features of the dock.\\n\\nIn order for a Surface or Surface Book to be a full desktop replacement, I consider this a necessity.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00MMLV7VQ\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acer Chromebook<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00MMLV7VQ\/makithecompsi-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B00MMLV7VQ.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover\" \/><\/a>\\nThis might seem like a strange choice, but hear me out.\\n\\nWith the price of this particular model under $100, last I checked, and many similar models around that price, it makes sense to have a small, portable laptop that you can use to surf the internet.\\n\\nMany programmers have remote workspaces in the cloud and can do most of their development from a web browser. So, in my opinion a Chromebook can be an excellent\u2013and cheap\u2013programmer gift.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00G1PNG54\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raspberry Pi<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nRaspberry Pi has been around for a while, but it seems like it just keeps getting awesomer and awesomer.\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00G1PNG54\/makithecompsi-20\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15083\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/91eUklDesdL._SL1500_.jpg\" alt=\"91eUklDesdL._SL1500_\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a>\\nIt is an entire mini-computer for a ridiculously cheap price and you can get an awesome bundle, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00G1PNG54\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">like this one<\/a>, which adds all kinds of cool stuff to play with.\\n\\nGreat for tinkering around with a teaching programming to kids or making your own little programmatic or IoT devices.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B009UKZV0A\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Arduino Starter Kit (Official Kit from Arduino with 170-page Arduino Projects Book)<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B009UKZV0A\/makithecompsi-20\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15084\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/91xu3MNuk4L._SL1500_.jpg\" alt=\"91xu3MNuk4L._SL1500_\" width=\"500\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a>\\nI\u2019ve been a big fan of Arduino, but when I got mine, I didn\u2019t know what to do with it.\\n\\nSo, I wasn\u2019t going to put it on this list until I saw this starter kit.\\n\\nHaving <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B009UKZV0A\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a nice kit bundled with a book full of projects<\/a> turns this device from something I feel like I should be doing something with to something I am doing something with.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B009C98NPY\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Logitech G710+ Mechanical Gaming Keyboard<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B009C98NPY\/makithecompsi-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B009C98NPY.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover\" \/><\/a>\\nEvery programmer needs a good keyboard.\\n\\nI like mechanical keyboard, because they feel so good when you type on them.\\n\\nLogitech is one of the best companies for peripheral devices, so to me, this keyboard is a great buy.\\n\\nIn addition to being a fantastic mechanical keyboard, it also has a bunch of really cool gaming features, so I\u2019m totally sold on it.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B014N4CZE2\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intel Boxed Compute Stick with Windows 10 Pre-Loaded<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nHow awesome is this?\\n\\nAn entire computer, complete with Windows 10, on a stick. You just plug this thing into a TV or monitor and you have a computer.\\n\\nOh, and for just over $100. Wow.\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B014N4CZE2\/makithecompsi-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B014N4CZE2.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover\" \/><\/a>\\nLot\u2019s of cool stuff you can do with this.\\n\\nA top pick for a software developer gift in my opinion.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00N7I1ZVU\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HICTOP Prusa I3 3D Desktop Printer<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n3D printers didn\u2019t make it on my list the last two years, because the technology just wasn\u2019t that good and they were just too expensive.\\n\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00N7I1ZVU\/makithecompsi-20\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15092\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/81pm5e7IpqL._SL1500_.jpg\" alt=\"81pm5e7IpqL._SL1500_\" width=\"500\" height=\"472\" \/><\/a>But, finally with many printers under the $500 mark, I think they can make good programmer gifts.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0111MRT90\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acer Curved 34-inch UltraWide QHD (3440 x 1440)<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nI\u2019ve been using a Seiki 39\u201d 4k display for quite a while. In fact, at one point I had two of them hooked up to my PC, but I\u2019m starting to think that a curved UltraWide display may be the ultimate monitor choice for a programmer.\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0111MRT90\/makithecompsi-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B0111MRT90.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover\" \/><\/a>\\nThe 4k displays are great, but it seems like I never end up fully utilizing the space and sometimes find myself rolling my chair over to see one side of the display.\\n\\nI haven\u2019t picked up an UltraWide for myself yet, because I\u2019m going to be doing a bit of traveling, but once I get back, I\u2019m going to be ordering a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0111MRT90\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acer Curved 34-inch UltraWide QHD (3440 x 1440)<\/a>.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000TKDQ5C\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lasko 754200 Ceramic Heater with Adjustable Thermostat<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nThis is a bit of an unusual one, but I love this tiny, personal heater.\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000TKDQ5C\/makithecompsi-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B000TKDQ5C.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover\" \/><\/a>\\nIf I am cold in my office, I can plug this in and have my own heat without messing with the thermostat for the whole house or office.\\n\\nThis is just one of those extremely convenient things to have in your office-especially during the winter.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B015PD3HOC\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NETGEAR Nighthawk X8 &#8211; AC5300 Tri-Band Quad-Stream Wi-Fi Router<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nPatiently waiting for my existing router to break so I can buy this.\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B015PD3HOC\/makithecompsi-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B015PD3HOC.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover\" \/><\/a>\\nRouters generally suck. Wireless never works as advertised. The range is never good. Finally, though, someone created a router that is actually good.\\n\\nJust check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B015PD3HOC\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reviews on Amazon<\/a>. This is the real deal.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00WUKULAC\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple Watch<\/a> (or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00NC8PMUK\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Android Watch<\/a>)<\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00WUKULAC\/makithecompsi-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B00WUKULAC.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover\" \/><\/a>\\nI\u2019ve had my Apple Watch since it first came out and while I have some complaints and issues with it, I generally find it to be extremely useful.\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00NC8PMUK\/makithecompsi-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B00NC8PMUK.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover\" \/><\/a>\\nI can very easily get messages, time my sets at the gym, check my calendar, check my step counts and fitness goals and get all other kinds of useful notifications.\\n\\nI think a smartwatch, either Apple or Android is a good programmer gift for sure.\\n\\n<a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/2015\/09\/14\/apple-watch-review-after-3-months-travelling-with-an-apple-watch-heres-what-i-think\/\">You can find my full Apple Watch review here.<\/a>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00N2BW2PK\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fitbit Charge HR<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\nI\u2019ve got a lot of opinions when it comes to fitness trackers, and I still haven\u2019t found the perfect one yet, but the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00N2BW2PK\/makithecompsi-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fitbit Charge HR<\/a> comes pretty close.\\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00N2BW2PK\/makithecompsi-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B00N2BW2PK.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover\" \/><\/a>\\nI like this tracker, because the battery life is long enough that you can top it off each night or morning when you take a shower, and if you forget, you can last almost a full week.\\n\\nI also like that it tracks sleep and heart-rate automatically.
