We\u2019ve all heard the phrase \u201cmoney can\u2019t buy happiness,\u201d but how many of us <\/span>really<\/span><\/i> believe it?<\/span>\\n\\nSure, at a surface level, <\/span>I think most of us tend to agree that being happy is more than having money<\/b> and that there are some intangible and priceless things in life that are very valuable.<\/span>\\n\\nBut\u2026<\/span>\\n\\nDeep down, most of us really do believe that more money will solve all our problems.<\/b>\\n\\nIt\u2019s hard not to. So much of our lives is focused around money and getting more of it.<\/span>\\n\\n\"tiredWe go to work everyday to \u201cbring home the bacon.\u201d<\/span>\\n\\nWhen we get home from work, we have bills to pay.<\/span>\\n\\nWe try to <\/span>improve our skills and try to get a better job or promotion<\/span><\/a>, mostly with the intent of making more money.<\/span>\\n\\nEven when we go on vacation, we frequently think about how much it\u2019s costing us\u2014as I\u2019m so pleasantly reminded as I\u2019m here visiting oh-so-expensive Iceland.<\/span>\\n\\nAnd don\u2019t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with all of this. I mean, <\/span>we can\u2019t pretend like money isn\u2019t important.<\/b>\\n\\nBut there is something wrong with falsely holding onto the belief that there is some amount of money or even fame that will eventually, ultimately fulfill us and make us happy.<\/span>\\n\\nI\u2019ve been saying this for a long time<\/span><\/a>, but I haven\u2019t had a really good case study to use in the software development world, until I stumbled across <\/span>a pretty sad article<\/span><\/a> today.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n

Over 1 billion dollars and he\u2019s still not happy\u2026<\/b><\/h2>\n

\\n\\nIn fact, he\u2019s more depressed than ever before.<\/span>\\n\\nMarkus Persson is the Swedish programmer who created Minecraft over a weekend in 2009.<\/span>\\n\\nFast forward to today, where he has fairly recently <\/span>sold his company to Microsoft for 2.5 billion dollars<\/b>, easily making him a billionaire.<\/span>\\n\\n\"Minecraft<\/span>He should be happy, right?<\/span>\\n\\nLiving the high life. Partying hard. Everyone likes him. He can have anything he wants. He doesn\u2019t have to work anymore.<\/span>\\n\\nThe perfect formula for happiness, right?<\/span>\\n\\nWrong!<\/span>\\n\\nJust read through the series of Persson\u2019s tweets <\/span>highlighted by this article<\/span><\/a>. In fact, take a quick scan through his <\/span>Twitter timeline<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\\n\\nI don\u2019t mean to be mean here, so don\u2019t take it the wrong way, but when you look through his Twitter timeline, <\/span>he doesn\u2019t just seem unhappy, but pathetic.<\/b>\\n\\nHe seems desperate for friends. Desperate to make some kind of meaning out of his life and is very unhappy and lost.<\/span>\\n\\nI think this tweet sums it up best:<\/span>\\n\\n\u201cThe problem with getting everything is you run out of reasons to keep trying, and human interaction becomes impossible due to imbalance.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\\n\\n<\/p>\n

Markus didn\u2019t even win the lottery<\/b><\/h2>\n

\\n\\nNo, he actually created a game and a company and sold it to make his money. It wasn\u2019t just handed to him on a silver platter.<\/span>\\n\\nSure, he might not have had to work quite as hard as some people to amass their fortunes, and he might have gotten a little lucky, but <\/span>he can still feel pretty damn proud of his accomplishment.<\/b>\\n\\nI mean, he actually created something that was wildly popular around the world.<\/span>\\n\\nHe deserves the cash he got\u2014he didn\u2019t rob a bank\u2014yet he\u2019s still not happy.<\/span>\\n\\nTo me, it\u2019s a sobering thought.<\/span>\\n\\nIt really makes me consider what we are all striving for and if it\u2019s really worth it.<\/b>\\n\\nI\u2019m nowhere near as successful as Markus, and I\u2019ve felt it myself.<\/span>\\n\\nI remember just a few years back thinking about how great it would be when I finally didn\u2019t have to work anymore. Thinking about how it would be to quit my job and just run Simple Programmer\u2014and to do it part time.<\/span>\\n\\nI remember thinking about how good it would feel to <\/span>write a book<\/span><\/a> and become \u201ca real, published author.\u201d<\/span>\\n\\nAnd it did feel good\u2014at first.<\/span>\\n\\nBut then\u2026 it became\u2026 well, normal.<\/span>\\n\\nI found that getting everything I had been hoping for and striving for didn\u2019t actually make me quite as happy as I thought it would.<\/b>\\n\\nI found myself becoming accustomed to my new reality and even taking it for granted. Worse yet, I found myself wanting to reach for even more.<\/span>\\n\\nIt was then that I truly realized that nothing would be good enough.<\/span>\\n\\nAnd that is where we can learn from Markus\u2019s example.<\/span>\\n\\nAs a software developer, <\/span>it\u2019s difficult to imagine achieving much more than he did.<\/b>\\n\\nNot only did he develop a super successful, highly addictive game, but he sold it for billions of dollars and did it while he was still relatively young.<\/span>\\n\\nMarkus, in some ways, shows us a glimpse of what some of us are aiming for\u2014for our wildest dreams to come true\u2014and he shows us the dark side of it, before it\u2019s too late for us.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t mean we shouldn\u2019t strive to be successful<\/b><\/h2>\n

\\n\\n\"MakeIt doesn\u2019t mean that at all.<\/span>\\n\\nBut what it does mean is that we need to realize that <\/span>success and money are not ultimately the things that are going to make us happy<\/b> and make us feel fulfilled.<\/span>\\n\\nAgain, I\u2019ve only a fraction of the wealth and success that Markus possesses, but I\u2019ve felt the effects on a small scale.<\/span>\\n\\nYou strive and strive for a thing and you finally get it, and then you are lost and instead of celebrating, you feel like you have no purpose.<\/span>\\n\\nA few years ago, I embarked on a 12-week body transformation challenge where I worked extremely hard to get myself in better shape than ever before.<\/span>\\n\\nI ate the strictest diet I had ever been on, followed my exercise routine perfectly, and ultimately won the competition, achieving stellar results.<\/span>\\n\\nOnce it was all said and done, was I happy?<\/span>\\n\\nNo. In fact, quite the opposite.<\/span>\\n\\nI fell into a deep depression<\/b> that lasted a few weeks until I found another purpose and goal for my life and realized that hitting the end of that 12-week challenge was not the end of my life, but just of that chapter.<\/span>\\n\\nI didn\u2019t find happiness again until I found a new challenge and goal to set my sights on.<\/span>\\n\\nHurl the spear forward, reach for it, pick it up, hurl it again.<\/span>\\n\\nThat\u2019s the key to life.<\/b>\\n\\nThe joy doesn\u2019t come in picking up the spear or even tossing it, but in chasing it, again and again.<\/span>\\n\\nYou\u2019ve heard it said many times, I\u2019m sure, but life is a journey, enjoy the ride.<\/span>\\n\\nIt\u2019s true.<\/span>\\n\\nWe have to focus on the journey itself.<\/span>\\n\\nWe have to realize that what we are doing now is the fun part.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n

Even as I sit here now, writing this post, I forget that<\/b><\/h2>\n

\\n\\nIt\u2019s easy for me to say, \u201cI have to write a blog post this week,\u201d instead of saying I <\/span>get <\/span><\/i>to write a blog post this week.<\/span>\\n\\nI forget how much I actually enjoy writing.<\/b>\\n\\nI forget how much of a privilege it is to be able to share my thoughts with hundreds of thousands of other software developers and programmers.<\/span>\\n\\nI forget that the very quality that makes writing hard is what makes it worth doing and ultimately enjoyable.<\/span>\\n\\nAnd then I realize that I was doing this with my career as well.<\/span>\\n\\nHow many days did I spend <\/span>waiting for the clock to tick down to 5:00 PM<\/b> instead of actually living and enjoying every moment I had writing code or solving problems?<\/span>\\n\\nHow many times did I \u201clive for the weekends\u201d or count down the days until my vacation?<\/span>\\n\\n(By the way, MJ DeMarco has some wise words on this topic in <\/span>The Millionaire Fastlane<\/a><\/span><\/i>,<\/span><\/i> a really good book.)<\/span>\\n\\nI\u2019m not saying I never enjoyed my work\u2014I did enjoy it immensely. I love programming, but I didn\u2019t enjoy it enough, because I always saw it as a means to an end and not the end itself.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n

What about you?<\/b><\/h2>\n

\\n\\n\"CryingWhen you sit down at your desk to work, are you wishing for something else, or are you able to fully embrace and enjoy the moment?<\/span>\\n\\nDo you think of what you get to do each day as a sentence or a privilege?<\/b>\\n\\nIs it a means to an end, or do you give it value in itself?<\/span>\\n\\nDo you realize that 90% of the enjoyment you get out of life will come from the hard work and only 10% from the enjoyment of the rewards it brings?<\/span>\\n\\nMore importantly, have you learned to live with yourself?<\/span>\\n\\nOr have you strived so hard and been distracted by so much that, if you were gifted with a sudden financial windfall, it would actually be a <\/span>slap in the face?<\/b> You\u2019d suddenly be forced to look in the mirror and perhaps find that you didn\u2019t really like what it was you saw.<\/span>\\n\\nAgain, I\u2019m not saying \u201cdon\u2019t be ambitious.\u201d<\/span>\\n\\nI\u2019m not saying \u201cdon\u2019t set high standards and goals for yourself.\u201d In fact, I\u2019m saying you should do precisely that.<\/span>\\n\\nBut what I cautioning you on is how you approach it.<\/span>\\n\\nDon\u2019t strive onward thinking that reaching the next level will bring happiness.<\/b>\\n\\nDon\u2019t fast-forward through you life trying to get to the good parts, so you can finally relax and live at normal speed. (If you do, you\u2019ll find the fast-forward button is broken, and you can\u2019t slow down.)<\/span>\\n\\nInstead, <\/span>focus on the moment<\/a><\/b>.<\/b>\\n\\nFocus on realizing that it is <\/span>your character and your mind that you have to shape to your will<\/span><\/a> and that anything outside yourself cannot bring you lasting happiness and fulfillment, because it can be taken away, and you\u2019ll eventually become habituated to it.<\/span>\\n\\nRealize that, right now, in the present where you sit, your life is happening.<\/span>\\n\\nYou don\u2019t have to wait for it to begin, and you can\u2019t put it on hold.<\/span>\\n\\nAnd if you happen to pass by me in an airport or see me at a conference, <\/span>stop me and remind me as well<\/b>, because I can always use a reminder.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
