It was the best thing that ever happened to me. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I almost lost my mind because I wasn\u2019t taking care of it. Way too much crunch time for an important project, coupled with some ongoing issues in my personal life, pushed my ability to cope with day-to-day life into the red. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was super, super stressed.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My heart raced. My mind raced. My ability to think clearly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so important when you\u2019re trying to get working software out the door<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went through the floor.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It affected everything, including how I felt, my relationships, my sleep and appetite, and especially my ability to do my job. It wasn\u2019t a good place<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was on the edge of somewhere nasty. Burnout.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the best thing that ever happened to me because, while navigating my way back from the edge, I learned a whole heap about how humans work. In particular I learned about our mental and physical limits, the nature of stress and anxiety, and most importantly, how to take care of myself so that I could stop this happening again.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s valuable information, and it applies to everyone. Programming often scores well in terms of <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/2014\/03\/19\/hate-job-wish-work-anywhere-world\/\">job satisfaction<\/a>, but programmers are humans and are subject to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/syndromes-drive-coders-crazy-2014-3?IR=T\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same limitations as anyone else<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><b>How stress works<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Programming culture emphasises excellence and ability. This can make it difficult to admit to ourselves or others that we might be having an issue with stress. <\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s literally baked into our neural and physical circuitry, so everybody has to deal with it at some point.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14376 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Depositphotos_21603645_m-2015.jpg\" alt=\"Depositphotos_21603645_m-2015\" width=\"265\" height=\"400\" \/><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><b>Stress in the mind and body<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress is a series of <\/span><b><i>physiological and mental changes<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that happen when our body and mind perceive a <\/span><b><i>threat or challenge<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in our environment. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stress response<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also known as <\/span><b><i>fight or flight<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kicks in when we process information that indicates we\u2019re <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under threat or facing a challenge. The physical symptoms can include:<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<ul>\\n    <\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle tension<\/span><\/li>\n<p>\\n    <\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased heart rate and blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<p>\\n    <\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shallow breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<p>\\n    <\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<p>\\n    <\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a sense of mental busyness<\/span><\/li>\n<p>\\n    <\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">narrow attentional focus<\/span><\/li>\n<p>\\n    <\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emotional reactivity<\/span><\/li>\n<p>\\n<\/ul>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evolutionary theory offers a neat way of explaining anything that humans experience in terms of survival. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stress response can be viewed as a <\/span><b><i>means of keeping us alive<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by preparing us to meet a challenge.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the physical responses associated with stress serve a purpose. For example, we tense up in preparation for explosive movement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very useful if we\u2019re about to escape from a bear that we\u2019ve encountered on a forest path. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not always so useful if we\u2019re hunched over a desk running some unit tests&#8230; <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or our digestion shuts down so that the energy it uses might be redirected to making our escape, which explains the nausea. <\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same thing happens with our immune response. Energy is conserved by shutting it down temporarily, at the expense of reduced immunity. This is why you often get sick at times of increased stress, and why excessive stress is associated with long-term, chronic illnesses.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><b>Stress and the nervous system<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14379\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Depositphotos_25047801_m-2015.jpg\" alt=\"Stressed Man Working At Desk In Busy Creative Office\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/>Stress is a pretty low-level response in humans. It\u2019s mediated by the <\/span><b><i>sympathetic branch<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the <\/span><b><i>autonomic nervous system<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The autonomic nervous system is responsible for a whole heap of automatic behavior in humans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stuff you don\u2019t have to think about, you just do.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a <\/span><b><i>parasympathetic branch<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> too, which has pretty much the opposite effect when it\u2019s activated. Which is great news, as we\u2019ll see later.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can think of these as like the accelerator and brake in a car. You need both to get to where you\u2019re going, but too much of them and you\u2019re either not going anywhere, or driving straight off the road.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><b>Perception of threat<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An interesting thing about the stress response is that it doesn\u2019t require the existence of a real, physical threat. Simply remembering a stressful situation can trigger the physical and mental responses. Go ahead, try it!<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The threat response can be activated whenever a challenge or threat is <\/span><b><i>perceived<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is why an email or conversation with your boss can be stressful, even though you are not in immediate physical danger.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><b>Good and bad stress<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A little bit of everything is good, in moderation. Red wine, project management processes, and even stress. <\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress is actually a pretty useful response in a challenging or threatening situation. One of the many reasons that we\u2019ve thrived as a species is our ability to evade threats and rise to challenges. We need a little bit of stress response in order to get things done. Call this good stress.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14374\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Depositphotos_20335035_m-2015.jpg\" alt=\"a man about to throw his laptop\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/>For example, as I\u2019m writing this article, I\u2019m experiencing some low-level stress symptoms. My foot is ticking as adrenaline is released, and my mind feels sharpened as I concentrate on the process of writing. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\\n<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve all been buzzed with the adrenaline of getting through a coding session many times in our career. For some of us, it\u2019s addictive.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low-level stress provides fuel for getting things done.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The probl<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ems come when our stress response is activated excessively.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every programmer has been on a death march at some point. Think about how you feel after a few weeks in crunch mode. You\u2019re probably tired, maybe getting sick, your concentration is waning, and you just generally don\u2019t feel good. Your focus deteriorates, which is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/2015\/04\/06\/5-ways-to-destroy-your-productivity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no good for your productivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turns out that continuously flooding your system with stress hormones, diminishing your digestive system and immune response, and being consumed by excessive thinking is not only uncomfortable, but also <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/helpcenter\/stress.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pretty bad for you<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the long term.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><b>Programmers and stress<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All careers have their sources of stress. Sometimes stress is caused by a particular job situation\u2014for example, poor management or team relations. <\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, there are inherent sources of stress caused by the nature of the career itself.<\/span>\\n\\nAs programmers, we need to consider a number of factors when examining our relationship to stress.\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><b>We live in our heads<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us turned to a career in programming because we like thinking about things and solving problems. We live in our heads a lot of the time, and are happy that way.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that we can become a bit disconnected from our bodies. Because we\u2019re not always paying attention, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s easy to ignore some of the physical symptoms of stress<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If we don\u2019t notice the problem, we can\u2019t go about solving it.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of healthy stress management is noticing when we\u2019re experiencing excessive stress, so we can take appropriate action.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><b>Cultural expectations<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extrinsic sources of stress are found in the working culture we operate in. Stress and busyness can be seen as a badge of honour, a sign of a productive employee, or just part of the job. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because we\u2019re all amazing super-human code machines (hint: we\u2019re not!), there\u2019s often an expectation that we\u2019ll keep delivering to a super-high standard sprint after sprint, project after project, with no time to rest or repair.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intrinsic sources of stress come from within ourselves. Programming culture values intellect, which causes us to compare ourselves to others, which leads to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geekmindfitness.com\/mindfulness\/how-mindfulness-meditation-stopped-me-feeling-like-a-fake\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impostor syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CFoxeiurl_E\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feeling guilty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both sources of stress in their own right.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><b>Diet and exercise<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14380\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Depositphotos_32854249_m-2015.jpg\" alt=\"Healthy Living Key Shows Health Diet And Fitness\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>\u201cA programmer is a mechanism for turning caffeine into code,\u201d so goes the old saying. I\u2019d add sugar to that list too! Stimulants like caffeine actually <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/stress.about.com\/od\/stresshealth\/a\/caffeine.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amplify the stress response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Again, this is fine in moderation, but not great long-term. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sitting at a desk all day isn\u2019t exactly conducive to physical fitness. The tension that is part of the stress response can accumulate in the body, leading to huge buildups of stress over time. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diet and exercise are both definitely part of the equation when it comes to programming and stress. Consider getting more active or taking it easy on the caffeine and sugary snacks for a while.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h2><b>Stress management strategies<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what\u2019s a busy programmer to do? Stress exists, it\u2019s going to get excessive sometimes, and, in the long term, it\u2019s not good for you.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you knew this about a system you\u2019d developed and maintained, you\u2019d take action, right?<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, stress has been <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2015\/07\/20\/esther-sternberg-balance-within-stress-emotion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thoroughly researched<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are a number of strategies that you can consider when trying to manage stress in your life. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They fall into three categories:<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<ul>\\n    <\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove the source<\/span><\/li>\n<p>\\n    <\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undo the damage<\/span><\/li>\n<p>\\n    <\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce your baseline<\/span><\/li>\n<p>\\n<\/ul>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><b>Remove the source<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14381\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Depositphotos_24511593_m-2015.jpg\" alt=\"Taking out the trash\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" \/>Sometimes it\u2019s necessary and sensible to work on removing the sources of stress in your life. Think about what causes you the most stress, and work to do something about it.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start a conversation with your boss about the effect all the overtime is having on your output. Drop that troublesome client. <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/2015\/09\/09\/practical-tips-on-securing-your-next-technology-role\/\">Think about changing jobs if necessary.<\/a> Ask your family for more support with personal administration if you can.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider removing yourself from any toxic relationships in your life. If you\u2019re pressed for time, consider whether you really need <\/span><b><i>all <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of those hobbies. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, find some time to rest and work on applying the brakes of the nervous system for a bit. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often there are internal sources we can work on too. What are your beliefs about being busy? Do you see it as important? Is it part of your self-worth? Do you push yourself extra hard, even though it probably wouldn\u2019t matter if you worked ten percent less?<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about your outlook? Do you tend to catastrophise? Do you look on every situation with negativity or positivity? <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How about your diet? Your physical exercise routine?<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quick audit of the internal and external sources of stress in your life will provide you with a list of actions you can take to remove them, if possible. It will really help to talk this over with a friend or colleague. It\u2019s sometimes hard to take a clear perspective when you\u2019re in the middle of a stressful period of your life.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><b>Undo the damage<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, it\u2019s not possible to remove all of the sources of stress in life. If you\u2019ve found a way, untold riches await, so congratulations! And please let me know your secret.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can certainly try to undo the damage though. And exercise is an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/stress-management\/in-depth\/exercise-and-stress\/art-20044469\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extremely effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> way to do this. Exercise release endorphins, which not only feel good, but also act to reduce the negative effects of released stress hormones. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise regimes are extremely personal;it can take a while to find one that works for you. My prefered stress buster is yoga<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it combines physical demands with deep breathing, which, as we\u2019ll soon see, is a great way to initiate relaxation. But anything that involves moderate to strong physical exercise will do. <\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><b>Pro-active stress management<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\nWe all have a baseline stress level that fluctuates during our lifetime. By taking a pro-active approach, it\u2019s possible to reduce this baseline.\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making stress reduction a goal of your life is a worthy goal. The less affected you are by stress, the more effective you\u2019ll be. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embrace conscious relaxation exercises, such as the one below. Or learn <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geekmindfitness.com\/mindfulness\/why-this-software-developer-teaches-mindfulness-meditation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mindfulness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> skills, which numerous studies have shown reduce the effects of stress.<\/span>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<h3><b><i>A quick relaxation exercise<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14382\" src=\"https:\/\/simpleprogrammer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Depositphotos_9304662_m-2015.jpg\" alt=\"businessman doing yoga in office\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/>Here\u2019s a quick exercise that helps most people relax. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It works on the simple principle that it\u2019s possible to <\/span><b><i>activate the parasympathetic branch<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your nervous system<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the part responsible for the relaxation response. You start to slow and deepen your breathing. Slow, deep breathing is associated with parasympathetic response, so when you take control of this aspect of the relaxation response, it tricks your body into activating the rest.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find a place where you can sit quietly for a few minutes. Your desk will do, but if you can find somewhere you can be alone and undisturbed, that\u2019s even better. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us are shallow, fast breathers, which is associated with the stress response. For this exercise, place your hand on your belly. We\u2019ll focus on breathing deeply. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Close your eyes, take a note of how you feel, and slowly take a breath in. Breathe in such a way that you feel your belly rise before your chest expands. Make the breath as long and slow as you can<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perhaps it might start out slightly faster, and then slow down. As you exhale, let your belly contract before your chest.<\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat this for a couple of minutes, generally for around ten to fifteen breaths. How resilient you are in the face of stress is determined by a complex set of biological and environmental factors. Your relationship with stress can, and does, change over your lifetime. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people find that learning more about their relationship with stress is very rewarding. Chronic stress is a state of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">misdirected energy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which causes many aspects of your life to suffer. <\/span>\\n\\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a delicate balance between optimal performance and stress<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Too little or too much stress kicks us \u201cout of the zone\u201d. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking control of excess stress has numerous benefits, whether they be purely physical, such as improved immune function, blood pressure, and so on; or mental, such as clearer thinking, improved focus, and increased likelihood of finding flow states. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a programmer, with a mentally demanding job, it\u2019s natural to look for ways to improve the quality of your thinking, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress management is a direct route<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A stressed person is emotionally reactive, which often affects communication and decision-making. Learning to manage excessive stress naturally <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leads to emotional balance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has a knock-on effect in all of your relationships: relaxed people are easier to be around. <\/span>\\n\\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Programmer burnout is a real phenomenon, and often job stress is a big factor. I\u2019ve personally experienced it twice (which is how I came to learn so much about stress!). In all engineering projects, preventative measures are cheaper and more effective long term.
