We’d all like to win the lottery right? Well, in this video I talk about why winning the lottery might not be such a good idea. I’ve found that in life, we only can enjoy and appreciate something that we have actually earned. It turns out when we are given something without having to work for it, we are robbed from the enjoyment of it–at least in the long term.<\/p>\n

Hey, John Sonmez from simpleprogrammer.com and I\u2019ve got something interesting for you this week and it\u2019s about winning the lottery.\u00a0 It would be pretty cool to win the lottery, right?\u00a0 Wouldn\u2019t that be awesome?\u00a0 If you won the lottery you wouldn\u2019t have to work again.\u00a0 You could just go on vacation for the rest of your life, buy whatever you want, not have to worry about money anymore.\u00a0 Well, actually I don\u2019t think so and I\u2019m going to tell you why coming up next.<\/p>\n
Most people want to win the lottery.\u00a0 You might think I\u2019m lying when I say I don\u2019t want to win the lottery.\u00a0 Hey, actually to be totally honest with you, part of me does want to win the lottery.\u00a0 Yeah, it would be nice to get some extra cash and not have to ever worry about money and again and I have dreams of vacations, taking things that I would do.\u00a0 But, in reality it might not be the best thing in the world.\u00a0 The reason why I\u2019m telling you about this is because I think it applies to your life in general, because once you understand this concept of why you don\u2019t want to win the lottery I think it will help you to do better at the work that you\u2019re trying to do.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s the key thing, here\u2019s the key thing about this is that we don\u2019t enjoy anything that we haven\u2019t earned.\u00a0 Maybe you have experienced this.\u00a0 In fact, maybe you\u2019ve helped your children experience this and not even realize that you need this lesson yourself or maybe your parents have taught you this lesson.<\/p>\n
I remember when I was a kid and my dad said, \u201cI can just buy you the new bicycle but you\u2019re not going to appreciate it unless you go out and work and make the money and earn it.\u201d\u00a0 That was so right.\u00a0 So many of the things that I bought that I worked hard and made the money for and then bought myself I took better care of them, I appreciated them more.\u00a0 The things that I was given I didn\u2019t appreciate as much.\u00a0 In fact, to some degree, at some level the things I was given I was actually robbed of an opportunity to enjoy it because I could not get the enjoyment that I would have gotten out of it if I had earned it.\u00a0 That\u2019s what happens if you win the lottery.<\/p>\n
Now, I haven\u2019t won the lottery myself so I can\u2019t speak from experience, but you can look at the news stories of people that have won the lottery.\u00a0 You can look at the news story of people that \u201cwon the lottery.\u201d\u00a0 What I mean by that is someone who sold their startup for millions of dollars suddenly became a millionaire, someone who became a famous rock star or actor overnight didn\u2019t really work their way up.\u00a0 I mean they worked their way up to some degree but they suddenly had riches dropped on them and then their life became ridiculous.\u00a0 They became suicidal, depressed, and some of them even did kill themselves or completely ruined themselves as a person.\u00a0 They were better off before they won that money.<\/p>\n
The reason why I\u2019m bringing this up is because this applies to you and your career and you might not even realize it.\u00a0 So many of us are daydreaming saying, \u201cOh, if I could just get that big break.\u00a0 If I could just get that raise.\u00a0 If I could just win the lottery.\u201d\u00a0 Might be even literally, maybe you\u2019re going and buying lottery tickets and you\u2019re thinking that that would make you happy.\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m telling you it\u2019s not.\u00a0 What\u2019s going to make you happy is earning your way.<\/p>\n
If you want to be rich, if you want to make money, if you want to be someone who doesn\u2019t have to worry about their financial future, don\u2019t count on winning the lottery.\u00a0 Don\u2019t wish that you\u2019re going to win the lottery.\u00a0 Instead think practically, what can you do, how can you earn your way because there is no way to enjoy that riches or any kind of accomplishment if you didn\u2019t earn it.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s my thought for this week.\u00a0 Hopefully you find this useful.\u00a0 Maybe you think I\u2019m a little bit crazy.\u00a0 Maybe you\u2019re like, \u201cAh, John, yeah I would rather win the lottery.\u201d\u00a0 Okay, I understand and hey, I could be wrong here, but I\u2019m just telling you from my personal experience, like I said, I never won the lottery, but I have gotten things handed to me and I have earned things.\u00a0 The things that I have earned I have truly been able to enjoy.\u00a0 The things that have been handed to me I haven\u2019t been able to, at least not nearly as much.<\/p>\n
