Drama, drama, drama– the developer community is full of drama.\u00a0 Everywhere you look there is some kind of drama that you can get tangled up in– don’t!
\nAvoid drama like you would rattlesnake and earthquakes (bonus points if you know where that quote is from.)
\nDrama doesn’t contribute anything positive to your life and it can give you a negative vibe.
\nIn this video, I talk about why drama is so bad and how to avoid getting wrapped up in it.<\/p>\n

John<\/b>:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hey everyone, John Sonmez from simpleprogrammer.com<\/a> and today I wanted to talk about a topic that a lot of developers, I mean people in general really get caught up on and it wastes so much of your time and so much of your energy.<\/p>\n

The topic I\u2019m talking about here is feeding into drama and we have a lot of this in the developer community.\u00a0 I mean there\u2019s always drama happening on Twitter and Facebook.\u00a0 People are posting their political agendas and other developers are attacking them or they\u2019re posting what\u2019s happened at some conference or some kind of article that someone wrote or they made some kind of sexist comment or they did this thing.\u00a0 We tend to get sucked right into this and to feed this.\u00a0 We tend to comment on it and fuel the flame and make things worse.<\/p>\n

This is something that\u2019s hard to resist.\u00a0 Sometimes I\u2019ll look at my Twitter feed or my Facebook feed and I just want to type something, would actually think about some subject and then I realize that I shouldn\u2019t even be reading this news article.\u00a0 I shouldn\u2019t even be paying attention to this drama because it\u2019s such a distraction and it\u2019s such an emotional drain.<\/p>\n

I know that after, sometimes, when I look through my Facebook feed and I see all this drama in there it drains me after I\u2019m done and then it makes it harder to work.\u00a0 I lose my motivation.\u00a0 It really gives me a sense of negativity.\u00a0 It\u2019s really important to stay positive if you want to have positive results because those emotions and those feelings around you will affect you and they will bring you down and they will cause you to become negative.\u00a0 They\u2019ll totally have the ability to change your mood.\u00a0 Plus, when you get involved in these things it never turns out right for you.<\/p>\n

The reason why there is drama is because it\u2019s something that polarizes people.\u00a0 What I mean by polarizes it divides them.\u00a0 Some people are very strong on one side and other people are very strong on the other side.\u00a0 There\u2019s almost no thing that you can say that is going to make everyone happy with you.<\/p>\n

In fact, when you type some comment to a post and you think you\u2019ve got the right answer there and then maybe you\u2019ve got a great answer you\u2019re going to get some supporters but you\u2019re also going to get a lot of negative backlash and over what?\u00a0 Is it something that\u2019s really important to your life?<\/p>\n

I mean yeah, when you\u2019re at work and you\u2019re making an architectural decision and it\u2019s really important because you know that this is the right way to proceed, yeah, fight that, have some drama there.\u00a0 Do it in a respectful way.\u00a0 Do it in a way that\u2019s going to benefit everyone.\u00a0 But when you\u2019re looking at some news article on Facebook or Twitter or whatever social media or Reddit or whatever it is and people are commenting and they\u2019re making harsh comments, adding to that is not going to help in any way.\u00a0 It\u2019s just wasting your time.\u00a0 It\u2019s distracting you.\u00a0 It\u2019s draining your emotional energy and ultimately it could hurt you at some point in the future when the wrong person reads your comment, takes it out of context and then forms a negative opinion of you.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s my advice.\u00a0 Stay out of the drama.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry about what other people are thinking, what they\u2019re doing.\u00a0 Just focus on your goals.\u00a0 Focus on what you need to do and try to stay positive.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to have a lot better career, you\u2019re going to have a lot better life if you can accomplish that.\u00a0 We all get sucked in from time to time, but just keep that in mind.<\/p>\n
