Even if you opt out of going to college, by spending some money, you’ll be able to speed things up, and get a deeper education in less time. 

You’ll work a decent amount of hours

But, this is normal for any higher level job. Unless you work as a freelance software developer and only take on a limited number of clients – you should expect to work full-time hours at your software engineer job.

How to become a software developer from scratch with no experience: 15-Step Roadmap

1. Find Your Why & Set a Goal

First and foremost is to have a clear and ambitious reason for your goal of becoming a software engineer or developer. Ensure that your reasons are strong enough to keep you going.

Maybe you hate your current job as a salesman, or accountant and want to become a developer. You want to work for a cool new tech company and get the nice salaries of a software engineer.

I’ve seen a number of people stop programming because they felt it was too hard to continue, but if you have a strong “why,” it’s easier to keep pushing than to simply give up when you face an obstacle. 

Otherwise, you’re actually just not going to do it. It’s difficult. It’s difficult to go from knowing nothing about anything and becoming really good at it.

It doesn’t mean you don’t have to love every minute of coding.

But you’ve got to love tackling and solving difficult problems.

You also can’t be turned off by working with and leading other people.

If you really want it, and you’re willing to go all in on this career – you’ll be able to make it as a software engineer.

Before we can run, we have to learn to walk. 

You walk by learning how to program in a single programming language. You don’t learn to walk by trying to learn 50 million things all at once and spreading yourself way too thin. 

Here’s 4 steps to succeed with starting to learn your first language: 

1. Start with the language most useful to you

Pick a single programming language that you think you would be likely to base your career around. The programming language itself doesn’t matter all that much, since you should be thinking for the long term here. What I mean is you shouldn’t try and learn an “easy” programming language to start. 

Just learn whatever language you are interested in and could see yourself programming in for the next few years. You want to pick something that will have some lasting value.

2. Start your learning journey properly

Once you’ve picked the programming language you are going to try and learn, try and find some books or tutorials that isolate that programming language. 

What I mean by this is that you don’t want to find learning materials that will teach you too much all at once. You want to find beginner materials that focus on just the language, not a full technology stack.

Expect to go through a book or tutorial three times before it clicks. You will not get “programming” on the first try–no one ever does. You need repeated exposure before you start to finally get it and can understand what is going on. Until then you will feel pretty lost, that is ok, it is part of the process. 

Just accept it and forge ahead.

3. Start coding right away

As you read through the material or go through the tutorial you have picked out, make sure you actually write code. Do exercises if you can. Try out what you learned. Try to put things together and use every concept you learn about. 

Yes, this is a pain. Yes, it is easier to read a book cover-to-cover, but if you really want to learn, you need to do.

When you’re writing code, try to make sure you understand what every line of code you write does. The same goes for any code you read. If you are exposed to code, slow down and make sure you understand it. Whatever you don’t understand, look up. 

Take the time to do this and you will not feel lost and confused all the time.

4. Start building your first small project

Now that you have a basic understanding of a single programming language, it’s time to put that understanding to work and find out where your gaps are. The best way to do this is to try and build something. 

Don’t get too ambitious at this point–but also don’t be too timid. Pick an idea for an application that is simple enough that you can do it with some effort, but nothing that will take months to complete. 

Try to confine it to just the programming language as much as possible. Don’t try to do something full stack (meaning, using all the technologies from user interfaces all the way to databases)–although you’ll probably need to utilize some kind of existing framework or APIs.

For your first real project you might want to consider copying something simple that already exists. Look for a simple application, like a To-Do list app and straight out try to copy it. Don’t let your design skills stand in the way of learning to code.

The Languages You Need to Become a Software Engineer

The top languages used by software engineers are Python, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, C++, Go, HTML, Ruby and Kotlin. They are of varied difficulty – as mentioned, pick the one you’ll need for your desired job. You can find this out by looking at job postings, for example. 

You could even call in to companies advertising jobs and ask them exactly which skills you’d need to be considered for the role.

4. Understand programming fundamentals & best practices

You need to learn how to write good clean code that is easy to understand and maintain. In order to do this, you’ll need to read a lot and see many examples of good code.

Beef up your library with the following books on coding fundamentals:

  • Code Complete
  • Clean Code
  • Refactoring
  • Working Effectively With Legacy Code
  • Programming Pearls – (do the exercises)

And language-specific structural books like:

  • JavaScript: The Good Parts
  • Effective Java
  • Effective C#

At this point you really want to focus your learning on the structural process of writing good code and working with existing systems. 

You should strive to be able to easily implement an algorithm in your programming language of choice and to do it in a way that is easy to read and understand.

5.  Learn a database technology

Most software developers will need to know some database technology as most series applications have a back-end database. So make sure you do not neglect investing in this area.

You will probably see the biggest benefit if you learn SQL–even if you plan on working with NoSQL database like MongoDB or Raven, learning SQL will give you a better base to work from. There are many more jobs out there that require knowledge of SQL than NoSQL.

Don’t worry so much about the flavor of SQL. The different SQL technologies are similar enough that you shouldn’t have a problem switching between them if you know the basics of one SQL technology. Just make sure you learn the basics about tables, queries, and other common database operations.

I’d recommend getting a good book on the SQL technology of your choice and creating a few small sample projects, so you can practice what you are learning–always practice what you are learning.

You have good knowledge of SQL when you can:

  1. Create tables
  2. Perform basics queries
  3. Join tables together to get data
  4. Understand the basics of how indexes work
  5. Insert, update and delete data

In addition, you will want to learn some kind of object relational mapping technology (ORM). Which one you learn will depend on what technology stack you are working with. 

Look for ORM technologies that fit the framework you have learned. There might be a few options, so you best bet is to try to pick the most popular one.

6. Decide how you’ll become a developer

Choose one of these 5 ways to be a software engineer:

  1. Get a college degree
  2. Take an (in-person) coding bootcamp
  3. Earn a certificate
  4. Complete an online course
  5. Learn entirely on your own

Degree

Software Engineering Degree

This is your longest and most expensive option. 

You’ll go deep on mathematics and fundamentals like data structures and algorithms. Coming out of college, you’ll have more knowledge about fundamental computer science concepts than someone who chose a more DIY path. You’ll have studied computer architecture, databases and source control.

But you might not have as much practical coding skill as someone who’s gone through a bootcamp, for example (which is 90+% hands-on practice).

Even if you go the traditional college route, keep building things in your free time on your own. Applying those theoretical learnings is where real growth happens. It’s how you make sure you’re more than prepared to work a software engineering job ‘in the real world’.

What degree you need to be a software developer

When you study to be a software developer / engineer, you can do an associate degree, bachelors and masters, or even a doctoral degree. 

The most popular fields of study for developers are computer science – a more theoretical line of study – and software engineering, which is a bit more practical with more time spent actually coding.

Courses

Today there’s hundreds of online courses teaching you aspects of software engineering within a timeframe of weeks or months. Courses are great if you are someone who can learn individually, but still wants guidance and resources in an easy-to-consume online format.

What’s missing is the community aspect of college or bootcamps. On the other hand, online courses are often more affordable and easier to complete successfully.

Certificates

If you’re not sure you want to commit to an expensive multi-year degree, you could opt to earn a certificate in software engineering first. These are cheaper and you only need six to twelve months to complete one.

Coding bootcamps

Go all out for one to six months and be ready for your first job. That’s the promise of coding bootcamps. 

Along with other like-minded aspiring software developers, you immerse yourself in studying and coding – for 8-12 hours per day. 

Because they’re so focused on having you execute everything you learn right away, you can expect to become a competent coder after only a few months of bootcamp.

Self-Taught

Can you really become a software developer without a degree?

It’s absolutely possible to become a software developer or engineer without a degree.

You could argue that skipping college puts you at an advantage: The time and money you’re saving can be put into your self-start projects, practical intensive courses, and interview prep. Some employers do require you to have a degree, while others are focused only on which skills you can demonstrate. 

Again, as a self-taught developer, you’re often ahead when it comes to practical application – though you might not be as well-versed in computer science concepts, math problems, data structures and algorithms.

7. Get Experience with an Internship

I’d recommend that as soon as internship opportunities are available to you that you start prepping and applying for those, so that you can be ready and get your foot in the door. 

Because one of the most difficult things is even if you have the knowledge, even if you understand how to program and programming language and how to use the tools and technology: No one is going to give you a chance. 

It’s hard to get your foot in the door without experience and internships are a good way to do that.

8. Stay Informed

Never stop learning. Never stop reading. Always be working your way through a book. Always be improving yourself. 

Your learning journey is never done. You can’t ever know it all. If you constantly learn during your career, you’ll constantly surpass your peers.

Start with small projects and move up to more challenging ones as you grow your skills. All the while, document everything you’re doing so you can show it off and use it to build your authority and personal brand as a developer.

Create your developer website

Starting your own developer blog is low barrier to entry and it’s extremely effective. If you blog regularly and consistently, it’s almost guaranteed that someone searching for your name on the internet will find your blog.

Think of a blog as an advertisement for you that works all day and night without you having to do anything other than feed it every once in awhile.

Aside from the external opportunities blogging offers you, it offers some great personal development opportunities as well. I don’t think there is any better way to improve your communication skills than writing.

Writing teaches you to organize your thoughts clearly in a way that other people can understand. The more you write, the better of a communicator you’ll become in general.

Blogging also helps you keep track of your own career and progress, as well as provides some historical documentation and reference material which you can look back on to see how you solved a particular problem in the past.

Every software developer should have their own blog: it’s like a lightsaber for a Jedi.

Learn to market yourself

I think this is so important that I built an entire course around the idea. Learn how to market yourself as a developer and continually do it throughout your career. 

Figure out how to create a personal brand for yourself and build a reputation for yourself in the industry and you’ll never be at want for a job. 

You’ll get decide your own future if you learn to market yourself. It takes some work, but it’s well worth it.

11. Create your Resume

When it comes down to it, resumes are more about advertising than anything else. You can think of a resume as a one-page advertisement for you. In fact, if you want to have a good––nay, a great––resume, you have to think of it that way.

The simple truth is, for most jobs you apply for, the only thing anyone will ever see is a quick 15-second glance at your resume. It’s in those 15 seconds that the course of your life literally can be determined. Interview or rejected.

Like it or not, a good programmer resume is important.

Ultimately, you want to portray very clearly what your skills and expertise are, how you’ve used them in the past to achieve great results, and how those skills might be transferred to the future position you are applying for.

12. Apply for your first software engineering Job

There’s another hurdle that you’re going to face – and that’s actually getting a job.

This might even be the most difficult thing out of everything I mentioned today. Even if you follow everything I’ve talked about and are truly a great programmer, no one’s going to give you a shot unless you position yourself properly.

Whether you like it or not, interview skills are a big part of the puzzle if you want to get a job as a software engineer. Being a great interviewee is a whole game in itself.

Get ready to prepare for months in advance, studying coding problems and holding mock interviews with your friends.

14. Teach

15. Continue your Education

I’ll say that no matter how you learn how to become a software developer, it still requires taking action, writing code. Just reading academically – going through the motions – is not enough.

You need to be creating some real applications and there’s opportunities today in the mobile development world. It’s easy for someone to create their own mobile application. Even web applications are fairly easy compared to what they used to be in the past. 

You could actually create a working application that you could actually sell and make some money,and build a business off of.

How long does it take to become a software engineer?

It could take you three months to four years to become a software engineer. With courses or bootcamps, you could be ready to start applying for jobs after 3-6 months. College is going to take 2-4 years to finish. Being self-taught software engineer takes months or years depending on your effort.

Can you become a software engineer when you’re older?

Yes, it’s absolutely possible to become a software engineer when you’re 30 or older. You can go through the same steps that someone younger would. After investing a few years into your new career, you can be exceptional at it – even if you’re not so young anymore!

2. What are variables? Without variables, you don’t have a program. Variables are values that change within a program, based on the overall conditions and the “work” the program is doing. Variables are values stored or “declared” within the program and represent the working data set for the program. Variables = data sets + algorithms.

3. What is inheritance?

Inheritance is one of the core concepts of object-oriented programming (OOP) languages. It is a mechanism where you can to derive a class from another class for a hierarchy of classes that share a set of attributes and methods.

4. What is polymorphism?

Polymorphism allows new objects in programming to assume the properties of existing objects. The object providing the inherited characteristics is known as a “base class” or “superclass.”

This is a program’s ability to process an object differently, according to its type or class. Picture a car versus a tank. Polymorphism would be a system that provides a blueprint for the systems they have in common and works across both types of vehicle.

5. What are pointers?

Pointers contain memory addresses for other values. Manipulating pointers can save time versus manipulating the data the pointers refer to. This can be an efficient way to write programs that manipulate data.

Pointers are used often in C, but less so in Java.

6. Name four types of storage classes. 

Register, static, external, and automatic.

  1. Register: These are storage classes kept in the register of the central processing unit.
  2. Static: This is a storage class in which the variable does not change. It is declared at the beginning stages of the programming task.
  3. External: A storage class local to a piece of hardware, such as device drivers. These say to the compiler: “If I need this variable again, read it from the external device for the most current value.”
  4. Automatic: A storage class in which blocks or functions define local variables.

7. What is encapsulation? 

This is one of the most important concepts in object-oriented design. It involves bundling together a class with a set of instructions. In encapsulation, an object includes not just its data but also functions that can mutate that data. Encapsulation may be used to hide the nature of the data while still facilitating interaction.

Arrays are the most common data structure in programming—and a vital component in determining how information is accessed. If you have variables as the fundamental building blocks, arrays are the next step up.

A linked list is another common data structure that complements the array data structure.

Similar to the array, it is also a linear data structure and stores elements in a linear fashion.

However, unlike the array, it doesn’t store them in contiguous locations; instead, they are scattered everywhere in memory, which is connected to each other using nodes.

Because of this structure, it’s easy to add and remove elements in a linked list, as you just need to change the link instead of creating the array, but the search is difficult and often requires O(n) time to find an element in the singly linked list.

It also comes in varieties like:

  • a singly linked list, which allows you to traverse in one direction (forward or reverse)
  • a doubly linked list, which allows you to traverse in both directions (forward and backward)
  • a circular linked list, which forms a circle

In order to solve linked list-based questions, a good knowledge of recursion is important, because a linked list is a recursive data structure.

If you take one node from a linked list, the remaining data structure is still a linked list, and because of that, many linked list problems have simpler recursive solutions than iterative ones.

Remember that the most important underlying skill for any type of programmer is the ability to think logically.

87. Here’s an example of a problem involving random selection:

If you had an array of 52 numbers, such as a deck of cards, it would be easy to choose one at random. Your task is to generate a number between 1 and 52 and use that as the index to your array. In other words, derive a system whereby a number or card is chosen at random from a set or deck with all numbers or cards equally probable.

88. Here’s a more difficult variation:

Imagine you can neither see the whole set at once nor store it. In other words, you’re not told how many total numbers there will be, and you are shown only one number at a time. You cannot store all the numbers you are shown, and you are only told when you’ve seen the final number of the set.

If you are allowed to store two numbers at most, can you respond with a random number, chosen in an equiprobable manner, from that one-at-a-time set or stream immediately upon being told the stream is complete?

89. Here’s how to solve this problem:

You need store only two numbers: the total count of numbers seen so far, and your current candidate response, selected from the number stream if it were to end at that point.

When you are shown the first number, you have a count of one. Therefore, your candidate response must be the first and only number seen—it has a probability of one out of one. If you are shown a second number, it becomes your new candidate response with a probability of one out of two. Likewise, a third number will become the new candidate response with a probability of one out of three, and so on.

Thus, as each new number is seen, generate a random number between one and the number of data points seen to that point (N). If your random number is equal to N, then keep the number you were just presented with as your new possible response. Otherwise, keep the answer previously saved through this same logic.

You perform this selection update each time you see a new data point. When you are told the stream is done, the saved value is the right response, chosen equiprobably from all the numbers seen. The probability is 1 out of N regardless of how many there were before the stream stopped.

By asking so-called behavioral questions during your programming interview, they’re trying to figure out if your personality will fit their company’s culture.

If you’re arrogant, you get argumentative and defensive quickly when someone criticizes you, or you start blaming others, they’ll take that as a reason to reject you for the job.

Though most of your programming interview will be about your coding skills & analytical ability — it’s well worth your time to prepare for these “softer” questions. Recruiters will probably ask you about some of the points in your resume as well. So it makes sense to be ready for that, too.

98. What are your weaknesses?

When they’re asking about your weaknesses, give them an actual weakness of yours! Don’t give another strength of yours, disguised as a weakness.

This would make them think you’re arrogant or egotistical.

Rather, be honest about a weakness you have — but then show them how you’re working to overcome that weakness.

99. What’s a recent technical challenge you’ve faced — and how did you solve it?

They’re judging your process here.

Prepare a situation you had, in which you solved a problem through a process.

It might be an error you at first couldn’t solve. But you show them your process of how in the end, you managed to debug  it.

Maybe you went to Google — but Google didn’t find anything.

Then you went to Stack Overflows. Then you went to some of the blogs you know, you watched YouTube videos. Maybe you still couldn’t find the answer.

So maybe you went to your mentor.

Your network.

Maybe finally you got to talk to the creator of the stack or the open source library. And you finally solved the problem.

This is how you show them what you can do for them, by using your amazing problem-solving process for their company.

100. What have been your failures, and how do you deal with failure in general?

Again, be honest about a real failure you’ve experienced. Then you can paint yourself in a positive light by showing how you’ve bounced back from that failure and how you’re making sure the same won’t happen again.

It’ll show them your strength of character.

101. Why do you believe you’re a good fit for this job?

This is a great place to give your elevator pitch.

Even if it’s not asked, you can answer this question: Maybe on your way out, if someone’s walking you out.

It’s about the why. You have to sell them on the why. If you’ve ever watched Simon Sinek’s video, it’s much like that.

The why, how, and what.

102. What’s the greatest knowledge you’ve gained from a past experience?

This question revolves around a specific point on your resume.

This is where you have a great opportunity to sell some of the soft skills you might have learned.

Or if you just got done with a strength and weaknesses question, relate back to the weakness, and talk about the strengths that you were just talking about.

Regardless, this behavioral programming interview question is where you can sell what you’ve learned and why you believe now you’re prepared for this job because of what you’ve learned in the past and how that will help you here and now.

103. How do you handle conflict with co-workers?

What the interviewers are looking for here is that you can prove you can work well with people, aren’t petty — and if conflicts happen, you’re both resilient and proactive in solving the problem.

So instead of blaming and complaining, you’re taking the lead. You’re acknowledging you might be partly responsible for the conflict, but you’re not being weak either.

104. General “small talk” questions

You might get to small talk with the interviewer. Here it’s important not to reveal anything that they’d use to immediately disqualify you.

Don’t talk about:

  • Politics
  • Religion
  • How you think about others of different cultural backgrounds

‘Weird’ Common Programming Interview Questions they won’t stop asking

Sometimes, the interviewers will ask you something slightly “cringe” — cliché questions they got from who-knows-where.

They won’t really help them assess candidates in the way they think they do. But they’re sometimes still asking them.

Have a satisfying answer prepared and you’ll be able to dodge these unnerving, but still common questions.

105. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Paint the picture of how you’ll still be working for their company, growing it in all sorts of ways.

Never talk about how you’re considering other options for your future.

106. What was your salary at your previous job?

Here they’re trying to see if you’re going to give up proprietary information to someone else.

When you’re asked this question, say something like “I’d prefer not to reveal my previous salary right now because that’s proprietary information.”

107. What salary do you want for this job?

If the interviewer asks you about what salary you want in the job you’re applying for, don’t answer the question directly. What the question really is asking is if you think of yourself above the company.

Rather say something like: “I feel that I’d like to know more about the company and see how we like each other before we discuss salary. And salary’s not the most important thing I’m looking for.”

After all, you’ll later have to negotiate your salary as part of your overall compensation package, anyway.

108. You have nine balls. Eight are of the same weight, one is heavier. You’re given a scale which tells you only whether the left side or the right side is heavier. Find die heavy ball in just two uses of the scale.

Divide the balls into sets of three. After weighing once, you’ll know which has the heavy ball.

X (X + 1) / 2 = 100 -> X = 14.

We go to floor 14, then 27, then 39, … This takes 14 steps in the worst case.

Directives are attributes that allow users to write new HTML syntax based on their applications. Its syntax is executed when the Angular compiler confronts them in the DOM. Angular majorly supports structural directives, attribute directives, and component directives.

In this post, I’ll share with you everything you need to know about nailing video interviews and landing your dream remote job.

Preparing For and Acing All Your Virtual Interviews

Even if you dread interviews, you can still set yourself up for success simply by doing your research.

Start with the basics: Besides the job descriptions for positions you’re interested in, you should also head to the company’s website and read about their mission and values. Get a sense of the work culture and whether it’d be a good fit for you.

Moreover, your research should go beyond the company website. Check out employee reviews on sites like Glassdoor to see what current and former employees have to say. You can also search for articles, blog posts, or YouTube videos that give you a behind-the-scenes look at the company. Finally, you can look for information on the interviewer, such as their LinkedIn profile.

It goes without saying that if you know someone who works at the company, reach out to them and see if they’re willing to connect you with the hiring manager. This will give you a chance to learn more about the company and potentially get your foot in the door.

Prepare a Counter Offer

If you want your resume to attract the attention of potential employers, you need to simplify it to clearly show why you’re the best candidate.

But even in a “candidate’s market”, landing an interview for a programming job is still not a cakewalk. The high demand for programmers in today’s job market is no secret, especially in the wake of the Great Resignation.

In such a complex discipline, a resume is your sales pitch, not a book report on every detail of your whole career. While there are many best practices to follow on your resume, focusing on simplicity will solve many of the most common mistakes that programmers make.

By making the complex simple on your programmer’s resume, you’ll start landing more interviews. The following four tips will help you write a resume that stands out.

Simplify Your Jargon

It is absolutely essential to include the languages, environments, and other technical terms that are called for in the job posting. This is the only way the recruiter will see that you have the key qualifications they’re looking for.

However, if you don’t make the effort to naturally integrate these terms into your resume, it’s easy to drown your accomplishments in a sea of jargon. Too many programming resumes I’ve seen are filled with 4-5 line run-on sentences that are so bloated with jargon that it’s impossible to understand what they actually mean!

Remember, your first resume reader is a recruiter—it’s not necessarily another programmer at the first stage. While the recruiter will be familiar with the terms used in your job, they won’t have your depth of technical knowledge. So try to simplify your jargon as much as possible without sacrificing key information about your skills, experience, and accomplishments.

Your technical terms and jargon should always be in the context of specific accomplishments. To do this, you need to focus on how you skillfully used the particular language, framework, etc. to meet a challenge or solve a problem for your organization, not just naming the technology to claim that you know how it works.

That proof of your tangible impact and what you offer the company is what convinces hiring managers to choose you. (Don’t forget how important your soft skills are in setting you apart, too!)

In short, if you include too much jargon without context, you run the risk of confusing or alienating your audience. Not only will this make your resume difficult to read, it can also make you look like you’re trying to impress them with a wealth of advanced terms instead of your actual skills and impact.

Tools for Finding the Right Words

If you’re having a hard time explaining your accomplishments without using tons of technical terms, try using a thesaurus to find common words and phrases that will be easier for non-technical readers to understand.

Another tool you can use is Google’s Ngram Viewer. This tool lets you see how often certain words and phrases are used in books, articles, and other publications. This can help you find more common or clear alternatives for jargon-y terms.

Finally, remember that the job posting you’re applying to should be your ultimate guide on what words to use. If a term appears in the job posting, use it in your resume, and simplify the language around it.

Categorize Your Skills Section

When it comes to your Skills section—a vital ingredient of your resume—less can be more. Include only the most relevant skills from the job posting for the particular job. Just like with jargon, as I mentioned in the previous section, including a massive list of skills doesn’t make you look impressive, it just makes your resume harder to read!

Even after culling the section down, most programmers will still have more technical skills to list than many other professions. Instead of dumping huge word clusters on the page, try to categorize your skills into different sections to make them easier to scan through.

For example, you might want to create a section for “Technical Skills” and another for “Interpersonal Skills.” Or you could group your technical skills with categories like programming languages, environments, project management tools, cloud computing tools, etc.

The key is to make your skills section easy to read—or, more accurately, skim. This will help potential employers quickly identify your qualifications with the most critical skills for the job, and it will also make your resume more enjoyable to read.

Emphasize Project Accomplishments

When it comes to your work experience, always provide details about projects. But focus on the accomplishments and not the minutiae.

As I mentioned above, it’s your offered skillset and not just your raw knowledge that will get you hired over another programmer. Ultimately, an employer wants to see on your resume how you helped the company make money.

To that end, tech recruiters always want to see specific projects that you’ve worked on, whether in jobs, internships, or code camps—but you need to be concise in how you describe them. Meaning, focus on the skill, the challenge, and the result rather than detailed descriptions of every step in the full lifecycle of the project.

Lengthy descriptions waste the recruiter’s time and can make them miss the important parts of your experience; just give them what they want to see.

If you’re having trouble emphasizing your accomplishments, try structuring your bullet points following the VCR rule: Verb, Contribution, Result. Here’s an example:

Synthesized 10 different databases and integrated a CRM and various payment systems to create a database application used in call centers worldwide to handle tickets more quickly

  • Active Verb: “synthesized”
  • Contribution/Skills Used: “10 different databases and integrated a CRM and various payment systems to create a database application used in call centers worldwide”.
  • Result Achieved: “to handle tickets more quickly”

Keep Your Resume to Two Pages

simplifying programmers resumeOne of the most common mistakes I’ve seen on programmers’ resumes is that they’re too long. In almost all cases, two pages will be enough to cover your experiences—and if you’re early in your career, one page may be all you need.

An important component to remember is that recruiters have at least dozens, probably hundreds of other resumes to go through for the position you’re applying to, so many of the recruiters won’t read past a second page. They simply don’t have the time, and if you haven’t impressed them by the second page, they’ll reasonably conclude that there won’t be anything important enough to change their mind past that.

No matter how complex you think your job is or how much experience you have, potential employers don’t want to wade through pages of information—they just want to see the highlights. So include only what’s most relevant and cut out anything that isn’t.

Tips and Tricks

Carefully analyze the job posting to find out what is most important for each particular position and company, and then edit each position on your resume to focus on that. Generally, try to stay within 3-6 bullet points for each position depending on how long it was, and keep each bullet point at no more than 2 lines, 3 at the most. (If you’re going over either of those limits, go back to tip #3 and simplify your language.)

This also means focusing on only the last 10-15 years of your career if you’ve had a lot of experience, and shortening the details of your education or your least relevant internships if you’re early in your career.
