In reply to Sid. I had the very same concerns about Android for a long time, and having an ipad mini really didn't help with that, but off late Android's been making great progress. Doubt you'd regret the jump back.

I too went the Samsung route through every Galaxy phone up until last year I got my first Nexus phone the Nexus 6 by Motorola and loved it. I just upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy s6 edge plus (It’s a gorgeous phone inside and out and it feels good to be back on Samsung software -but out of box it is noticeably slower than the Nexus 6 even with 4Gigs of DDR4 and the 64 bit processor! I have removed much bloatware and now have a custom kernel etc. and it’s just as fast) Anyway, I have to send my Motorola to T-mobile for the jump thing and it makes me very sad. The first Galaxy 6 edge plus I had I cracked my screen less than 12 hours after getting it. Dropped onto ceramic tile floor from 1 foot without a case (which was due to arrive the next day). So $175 insurance claim later I now have an awesomely beautiful and fast phone that I can customize to my hearts content. I just feel like it’s fragile. The Nexus 6, with a Spigen Neo-Hybrid case (All of my phones get these…love them) has taken falls, been tossed out of moving machinery onto concrete, landed face down and still when you take off the case is 100% like new without even a scratch in the glass…. I’m happy with the new one, but I wish Samsung’s durability was like the Motorola Nexus.

Great Article! I especially like the attention to the first time user. I know that will continue for some time -although sooner rather than later everyone in the developed world will own a smarpthone as it will be all that you can buy. It’s important to note that many of us Android fans have grown with the platform. I owned the Dream as my first smartphone and have had Android phones since. I learned to program because of that phone actually. Started with Java, learned Android went back to school for an IT degree in software development. Oh, and left a decade long career as a tattoo artist to be a programmer. Of course I still tattoo just not as my day job. Needless to say, a well rounded and well thought out piece.

Nicely explained. I remember my first smartphone was an Android and then I jumped to iOS and still have it. The main reason I moved to Apple was security, maturity level for apps, support for the devices and OS. I believe Google should also enforce some strict rules in their store like Apple does it to lower the number of crappy apps in store and to publish only the quality ones. I think Android is also concerned about the security more than before and also moving to the right direction with its Marshmallow update. I can’t deny that how much I like Android’s material design but the overall quality that I see via using my daily tasks is not up to the mark. Also, I’m thinking to jump again to Android for my new handset bt not much sure about it as I’m still comparing some handsets out there.

Former Android user here, I started with the Droid X and ended with the Galaxy Nexus. The choice was simple, screen size. Being an old fart, the bigger screen always won out.

Then Google stopped updating the Nexus less than 18 months after its release. Google broke it’s own rules of supporting a phone for at least 18 months.

When the iPhone 6+ came out, I took a look at it and the Current Nexus offering at the time, which was the first Nexus on Verizon since the Galaxy Nexus. All the specs were close, but it came down to 3 things.

1 – Security – Since the debacle with the Galaxy Nexus, security was on the forefront.
2 – Screen Size – The iPhone had more of a sweet spot with 5.5in screen, vs the 6in screen from he Nexus
3 – 64 bit processor – The iPhone has a second generation 64bit processor, where the Nexus was still 32bit

Apple won out. I only miss the Google Now widget on my home screen. Also, iOS is starting to have widgets in the top drop down tray (notification screen) which is very useful. One swipe down and I have a lot of information there, vs swiping to different home screens to find the widget I want to look at.

Android makes a good OS, and the manufacturers do a decent job of having good equipment, but Apple is better for me. Your mileage may vary.
