I love the story of the pottery classes and tell it to my kids often. But I still struggle with wanting to do it perfectly the first time, which often means not at all.

Really good post! Time to start coding having faith in myself ;). I alway waste a lot of time thinking of how to accomplish a problem and every solution has it’s downsides, so i can’t decide how to start… nbut we can always do a lot of refactor in the future. We just need to start coding! 😛

This is probably the biggest barrier I’ve had to overcome (Still catch myself doing this a lot!).nI believe it’s best to just jump in and start working.nSet a fixed amount of time you can spend on reading up on best practices, preferably some bedtime reading, and implement them when you feel ready.nIt is however hard not to feel as if one is expected to implement these practices once you learn/know about them!

There’s a fine line between making the right choices up front and trying to do everything perfectly. One can save a tremendous amount of time down the line, the other wastes time now and later. Very valuable post, definitely something senior devs need to keep in mind. Thanks John.

Getting your email updates and sending them to my wife, since we are planning a big 3 month trip this summer doing home exchanges. So far, Berlin, Amsterdam, London, and Iceland on our schedule.
