Phpft! You want to see real Hate Fests going on? Go over into the Software Testing community. Not only do we hate on Developers, Marketing/Sales people, Project Managers and Senior Management we also get into it within our own ranks on multiple items. We can’t agree on which method of testing is right (Exploratory or Requirements Based or etc.), or how to define the definition of a “Bug” (Defect, Issue, Anomaly, SNAFU, FUBAR, etc.), or how to define/classify Severity and Priority of Defects, or Manual vs. Automated (Automated Tests are “Checks” only), which Test Automation tool to use (OpenSource vs. Commercial tools, or Scripted vs. Codeless/Scriptless) and other stupid things that we lose the forest for the trees on.
So there is a lot of Hate to go around.

It’s not just mindless hate, but mindless belief as well. OOP, functional programming, Rails, TDD. We believe the next big software ideology will save us and fix everything. It never does, but this cycle repeats itself over and over.

Nice piece. I can relate. I gave up on Slashdot years ago because too many articles and comments were used as an excuse to spew seething, rabid hatred of everything Microsoft. I understand the sentiment decades ago, when MS used ruthless tactics to undermine the competition, but that was then; things have changed. Today’s haters don’t seem to have rational reasons, just some permanent grudge they can’t get past, years after the departure of Gates and Ballmer. You’d think programmers/technologists would be less prone to tribal emotionalism.

Good job bringing this issue up, I’ve been guilty of this – even outside of my professional life. A few things lately have started turning me around for the better though. I started writing my blog posts and participating in forums with the sole purpose of making sure I’m helping someone who might be struggling with something. The haters out there make these people not want to participate and ask for help, for fear that they will get the response “just stop using ____.” I like to think of myself as a representative of them so they feel more confident and know that there are people out there that want to learn with them.

I saw a good quote on murphys-laws.com recently: “Those who have the least amount of practical experience usually have the strongest opinions about how things should be done.” I also like to think of this when a hater is ranting. They might be in a place where they’re not down in the trenches – where your mindset and ability to be practical is what’s important. When you are focused on bringing value to whatever you’re doing, you simply don’t have the time and energy to push your opinions on other people.

I’m not sure shunning a technology just because the wider community does is a bad thing in some cases. It saves time. Why should we all waste time on a thing that the majority have found to be bad? If a product on Amazon has 1000 reviews, with 800 one-stars… even assuming a couple hundred might be uninformed, I’m going to safely assume the product sucks and look elsewhere.

I think this is human nature. Humans tend to get “religious” about most things, not just software. It seems like it exists more in our industry because that’s the community we work with every day.

In addition, we constantly make decisions where we choose one technology over another, so it’s only natural to justify that decision by “hating” the alternative.

There are two ways of doing something, simple and complicated. The answer for hate in the community is very coupled with the previous sentence. I personally hate PHP and CMS, for being used in projects that are not suited for and then being served as a model, facebook started as PHP project and gradually was changed or improved(what was the reason for language choosing I guess it was the most common hand to do things at that time when it was launched) this was the most common thing you heard when you enter in a discussion about PHP. CMS on the other hand there are another story, if you have simple to medium project not very customizable, than Drupal, WordPress, Symfony, than it may be good, but when you need to do a customization that essentially means changing a lot of things and handling a lot of stuff, you start asking yourself, if it is worth it? This is how hate appears to some programmers I don’t speak about elite, I speak about guys who want to do something and end up doing anything else regarding their requirements.

Now the conclusion is very simple, yet difficult to understand, use the right tools for the right job and be flexible about it. If everybody understand this, the number of haters will be decreased.

Many people know that there are two ways to do something… theri way and the wrong way. I worked with many frameworks, systems and libs. Some i like, many i don’t like. But every time i could see, why it was developed and why some people find a benefit in it.
I would never say ‘You choose the wrong technology’ only ‘I would choose an other technology’.. no one have to defend his decision. I think every one had good reasons for the decision.

I don’t hate CMSs but I’d rather not work with them under certain circumstances. Like having to take care of many things(different projects not using a CMS) and projects(websites) developed and supported that were created on a CMS(Drupal, WordPress).

It’s because they require a lot of effort and time. Mostly time. i.e, Drupal has its core which is frequently updated with new features and security fixes, the same thing happens with modules. Keeping up to date a Drupal installation could become boring and tiring. Now, what if one would have to maintain 2 or more?

That’s my personal reason. I’d surely be glad to work with a CMS if I can have some conditions in favor, like full control(via ssh) of the server. Just my two cents.
