I am a female in my 30s and I just took a course at the university this past semester and I felt the same as you. I am actually trying to decide if I should continue at the university or pursue self-teaching.

Use Anki. Trust me. It’s able to analyze what you’re unable to remember best and is able to analyze what you do best and worst at in terms of memory. I’m a bit old fashioned myself and built an artificial Anki system using flash cards I wrote myself and keep a spreadsheet of what I miss the most. Not quite as sophisticated sure, but it’s clear where my weaknesses are.

Also, re: the young white males who seem to be knowing what they’re doing. Don’t be intimidated by them. More often then not it’s just young bravado. More often than not their code would make a lead developer throw up. I remember seeing the code written by some kids I was working with in a data structures class. That code still haunts me. No classes. EVERYTHING in the main file. It’s amazing how far confidence can take you.

Just be confident and keep pumping code out. And if people are mean, let ’em. Find some nice, smart people to work with, and put your nose to the grindstone. Hit me up @Kacheflowe if you ever have questions.

As a woman of color and at the age I am, this was an important post. I am at university so this is meaningful to me as I am surrounded by young, white males that seem to know what they’re doing and I feel intimidated a bit.
