It sounds like Martin completely misunderstands flow and creativity.

Hey thanks for sharing man. I picked the one on Lewis Howes’s show since I knew him and just listened to it. Great episode! Kotler mentioned that the authors of a book on Peoplesoft claimed that companies should be paying their employees based on the amount of time they are in ‘flow’ and not the 8 hours that they clock in. Just imagine that!

I have a question for you, what do you think about Uncle Bobs theory that flow is only good for repeated tasks that doesn’t require much brainpower?

I read the Clean Coder, and I was really surprised to hear his view on this, as I’ve never heard anything bad about flow before. Here’s a quote from his book:

“Here’s a little hint from someone whose been there and back: Avoid The Zone. This state of consciousness is not really hyper-productive and is certainly not infallible. It’s really just a mild meditative state in which certain rational faculties are diminished in favor of a sense of speed.”

Glad you enjoyed the article! Thanks for those resources – yes Kotler has a lot to say about peak performance, which is fascinating in its own right. I totally agree that the “just out of reach” aspect of the challenge is very conducive to flow.

I’m a flow seeker in all areas – my yoga practice in particular, which Csikszentmihalyi writes about beautifully in his book.

Nice job, Daragh. Mark Seemann was good on .NET Rocks! talking about this topic. Steven Kotler is the man (other, of course, than Csikszentmihalyi) on flow. I found his book a bit disappointing because I thought there was too much fluff and stories about extreme athletes, rather than more focus on the neuroscience, but still worth a read. He was actually better on several podcasts than in the book. He really emphasized risk and social interaction among his 17 flow triggers. His statement on skill/challenge is that the challenge should be a little out of the reach of our current skill level. Great stuff.

Thanks Kevin, it’s a great book. This article covers the classical basics, but there has been a ton of more recent research investigating what happens in the brain during Flow states!

I love the challenge/skill level picture – one of those things that seem obvious once you see it but also comes like a revelation. I will definitely be picking up a copy of Flow soon.
