In reply to Samuel MacLachlan. Get the practice tests. The tests only test your ability to take the test. Trancender is a good one at least last time I took them.

I wouldn’t do a brain dump just because Microsoft is pretty clear that they consider that to be cheating and will take strong action if they catch you. Of course, I may be biased because my reason for taking certification exams is to push myself to learn the material more than to get the piece of paper.

I’ve only done one of the exams so far, 70-461 Querying SQL Server 2012, and passed with a decent margin after working my way through the Training Kit MS puts out. Unfortunately, while that book was pretty good (except for the sample exam, which is worthless) most of the Microsoft test prep books seem to get bad reviews for being full of errors. Which is one of the main reasons why I’ve only done one of the exams so far. I’m guessing there’s a real demand for test prep books that are actually accurate and complete.

Thanks for this post, its exactly what I needed right now. I’m currently studying for a MS exam as a work requirement, and have spent hundreds of hours (plus a few years of on-the-job experience) studying, and have failed the exam miserably (a few times). Time to try something different.

Totally agree with you on what the exams really test. I did a couple of them and although I studied hard for all of them, I wouldn’t have passed them without using resources as Testking or braindumps. You really need to practice the questions.
I don’t think you need the certificates to show how good you are, because they only show how good you are in taking tests. My experience is that my employer needed us to get certified in order to get Gold Partnerships etc. But since there are people in recruitment who look first at them, they might help when looking for another job.
