I have never seen a post before that lists everything out that a lead developer does so clearly. Kind of scary how much is involved but I also think it can be a very rewarding role.

If there are any pluralsight subscribers who want to learn about this in depth I can recommend Dan Appleman’s course http://www.pluralsight.com/courses/introduction-leadership-management-developers it helped me to understand the role better, become a better listener, and to be less grumpy!

However, I DO need to know how to get the answers!

That means know how to analyse problems, break things down into smaller tasks, knowing who else on the team can provide guidance, etc.

Excellent post, everything you sais, I realized that my manager already doing and this is why I love working with him.

I specially agree on “lead by exemple”. When you don’t have to ask to people what they have to do, because they are inspired by a leader, they do it much more better because they took this decision on their own !

As usual great contribution. Always a joy to read one of your comments.
You are right, I should have mentioned How to Win Friends and Influence People, but I mention it so much, I thought I’d give it a break. 🙂

It’s great to learn what you have about yourself and have the self-awareness to change it.

I would say so. What I do now is really a non-centralize form of leadership. Some of the most influential leaders don’t have any kind of official role at all.

Thanks, and you are right about very few willing to make the sacrifice, but if you are, you will stand out for sure.
