This really pulls it all together. I’ve had groups of people working on a project that just blossomed when operating as you suggest above. Not only did others notice that they were working as a team, but the team became aware that they were working as a team. However, I had one team that simply refused to work as a team. Part of the problem was that the team size was 10-12 people… they tended to break into small cliques. As I look back on that situation, we suggested many times that we try to limit WIP. The defacto technical leaders in that group refused citing it as “inefficient”. As I dug into it further, I discovered that the even though I, as the scrum master, was encouraging these behaviors, the resource managers for those team members were not really on board, focusing on the individual and not the team. The product owner also liked the technical lead, having had a past working relationship with that lead, and so tended to go directly to that person, rather than to the team. So why would that technical lead want to work as a team when they could keep all the accolades to themselves? It requires a lot of education not only to the team, but to those who have a great deal of influence on the team. Sometimes they listen, sometimes they don’t.
