#1 sucks! I have an extremely rare name. As far as I know, there are only 3 “Joshua Wedekind”‘s in the USA. One is me. One is dead. And the other is a career criminal. So when you google my name, you get a lot of results for arrest records. But I’ve never committed a crime.

NOTHING, not a call, not an email not a single damn drop of interest. Because we are lacking talent in IT in this country.

H1B’s suck. It gives Corporate America a way to use and abuse people from foreign countries. I read up about what they do to these guys, they pay them less, give them less benefits, work them more hours etc. because they know they won’t complain and won’t quit because they may lose their H1B visa

It doesn’t really make much sence for someone in IT to say “Life was much better before the Internet.” But I guess that’s your opinion… One thing I can say from what I read here, you probably are either going to the wrong interviews or you master technologies that are no longer in use and refuse to ‘update’ your set of skills…

I wanted to add that up until 1 year ago, I always got the job or contract on the first interview and only once or twice on the second interview.nThe IT job market appeears to have come to a halt, judging by the few ads on Dice and on Craigslist.nI did go on over 30 interviews this past year, with no offers. It could be my social media profiles portray me as a venture fund manager, when in fact, I was only an investor in a startup.nThis is why resumes should only contain first name and last initial, so employers cannot Google you before hiring you.nLife was much better before the Internet.nNow you have offshore sabotaging our way of life.nI am starting to believe that we are headed for a major financial collapse and possibly World War III. It is inevitable that when your upper middle class cannot survive, the entire country collapses rapidly.nI have had to start my own business on the web, but it will take 12-18 months to gain traction, which I do not have.

I love your writing approach, it is hilarious.nI must say that this is the first time I encountered the "brogrammer" expression and I will definitely use it from now on, also as a side note I believe I have "tip" you rather generously ;)nnNow I just wanted to say that I also read the Tom's reply and even though I do understand what he was getting at, unfortunately things are not like that and I don't see how they could be...n- I never in my entire carrier encountered such a successful test that would indicate if a candidate should or should not be hired (at least not by it self). You just need to have a follow up interview, you cannot avoid this. We use various online coding tests as a starting point, they indicate which candidates are just not good enough. The rest of the process is focused on finding the right one.n- Regarding the qualified developer, I believe that the only way a state labor board could determine if someone is qualified is through a resume which is simply not enough. Not only that, this leads to a numerous false positively qualified participants, that is why we use coding tests as a preliminary testing.nnDon't get me wrong, people should definitely always come before companies, but I really don't see anything wrong with googling someone. Note that I don't do that but nevertheless I don't see why it should be illegal. Maybe I have a wrong impression of this but to me it seems that only the people that are hiding something would not want to be googled...nAlso is it not logical that you will look at the candidates public code repository if he provides one, for example like GitHub profile. From it you should often get a good insight of the candidates coding skills, and with a public socail network information, for example the facebook wall, you could potentially get the insight of the candidates communication skills.

I read this article and agree only with the fact that you have to deliver more than what you get paid.
However, I think the time has come to change the laws on hiring.
All programmers should be tested on skills, on a pass or fail system.
When you hire a programmer, you go to the state labor board and they send you the next available qualified developer.
It should be illegal to google someone or look at their faceBook posts.
Also, if you do not like your new developer, you can firre him/her, by paying them a 6 month severance package and they get put back in the line of available developers for hire.
All this bull about company culture, etc., has to stop. You go to work to work. You are given specs. You write the code.
If you want good people, you treat them like professionals.
I have been in IT for over 20 years. Companies suck the blood out of you and then toss you out like garbage when they are done with you. This is happening in all professionals. Companies are paying less than 50% today of what a person is really worth. How much more can a person give to a company. The time has come to end the H1B programs. Instead; better utilize the staff you have. Offer them bonuses for quicker completion. Py them better, so they can afford the lifestyle they deserve. You, as an employer, should not be able to choose who you like, but instead, take the person the state sends you. If you treat the person right, they will probably do a good job for you.
I have been contracting for over 20 years. It gets very old to have to interview every 8-12 months, plus be on the bench for 2 months per year on average. Interviews are stupid anyway. They ask you questions that you never use in your work. Interviews only create discrimination; plain and simple. Older workers are tossed aside. I have an idea. Yiu apply to the state for a software developer position, assuming you are qualified and tested. You do not get a job for 3 months. The state should either pay you your full salary for 1 year and have you come back then, or give you a gun and give you immunity, if you rob a bank. If I sound crazy, then maybe our system is even more crazy and unworkable. Let’s fix it. Let’s stop patronizing the companies and take care of the people first. People should always come before companies. We live in a democratic nation. Democracy means the people rule; not the big corporations.
