Interesting discussion. I actually set myself the goal of obtaining an MCSD this year because I thought that it will benefit me when I’ll be moving along to other opportunities, as I don’t intend to stay ten years in the same company.
Surprisingly, despite the negative bias I had against certifications as being mindless braindumps, I found myself learning quite a few things while preparing for the exam. Rediscovering or seeing some subjects for the first time, the ones that you typically don’t encounter much a daily basis while on the job, but benefit you in the long run and make you a more efficient programmer, with a broader knowledge and the potential to be able to choose among different alternatives.
Looking forward to passing the exams and see how it will impact my career in the long run!

I have completed the Scrum Master certification as well, I didn’t learn as much until I actually worked as a Scrum Master. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to pass the so called test. Currently I work for an Oracle Partner and they push us to complete them. From the companies standpoint I understand why it is important for us to show that we are professionals and understand the software we use. And like you mention John it tells the employer we are committed and working hard.

I just had an interview the other day. At the conclusion of the interview, I asked the interviewer what she thought, did my experience and personality ‘fit’ for the company. Her reply was interesting. She said yes, she thought I had the qualifications to do the job, but she had a reservation. While having years in the subject area (IT & network security), I haven’t worked directly in the arena for a couple of years (I was on special assignment within a big corporation). I replied, you know – you are right. However, that is the reason I paid for my own course (upwards of $4k) to attain a CISSP. She replied, that was appropriate given the situation I was in (worked in another related field – then coming back to IT Sec work) to bolster my credentials in the field. nShe was the HR recruiter for a company and said the cert helped getting the job. nnnI agree, a cert in and of itself isn’t all that, but the effort and focus and context of getting the cert all apply. Having a certification in itself is mostly meaningless. I think it is more of the process that you undergo in preparing and getting the certification that matters more. If you are getting it using a dumps that is when it is really meaningless and can really hurt when there on resume without knowing actually what it is (if you just got by dumps). nBut if one takes the route of understanding the technology/subject of certification, trying some practical things if applicable and then taking the certification it is really valuable. But then the knowledge is valuable even without one. Blogging the experiences of learning might be more valuable than the certification as that is something credible to show one’s knowledge, as there is no way to prove if a certification was taken with or without dumps. nnnnAgree with @disqus_3Y2yeE71OM:disqus on benefit to employer but questionable about employee 🙂

Most of the times I think certifications like the Microsoft ones, are to benefit your employer. The companies need a certain amount of certified professionals to maintain their gold or platinum partnership. They need that status for public tenders and consultancy. If your employer doesn’t reward you for getting certified, you only benefit when changing jobs, because it does look good on your resumu00e9.nI do have a simular experience as you talk about in this video, the first time I did the exams was when I wanted to become a .NET developer. I got offered the certification as the only option to learn .NET at our company. I wanted to switch technologies and to make sure my manager couldn’t deny me the chance, I did the exams and passed. There were 2 others with the same background as me, doing the training, but not taking the exams. It worked out for me, not for them. nLater on I found out I didn’t have the same drive for getting new certifications, because I had achieved my goal. So it became harder and I only did 1 Microsoft exam. I did do the Scrum master recently and a certified secure programming one, both because it looks good on my resumu00e9.nMy opinion is that the certificate doesn’t say anything about your skills or knowledge, but it can give you an advantage when applying for a job, because companies make a first selection based on these things.

Great Video!nnn I just want to share that in some rare cases, the certificates are required when you apply for a new job position. A lot of German companies set a requirement for the Quality Assurance Positions, where the candidate should be ISTQB certified. I have most of them and I think that they are really valuable because the examination process is really hard. And they are no dumps like there are for MS Certificates. nnnJust, to summarize, I totally agree that some certificates are more valuable than others and the most of the HRs know it.
