I agree, I also tend to learn to much at once. And most of the time it ends up that I learn a bit of everything but nothing in depth. So IMHO it is totally worth it to focus on the things that interest you the most. A few days ago I saw Trisha Gee's GOTO keynote "Staying Ahead of the Curve", a very interesting talk covering the same topic. If you liked this article, I'm sure you'll also enjoy her talk.

Its all about deciding which technologies, tools etc. that are worth spending your time on (both learning and actually *using* in your software).

If you make your own radar for your own career you can more easily pick the things to learn that are worth spending your time on (and therefor not get as overwhelmed, perhaps?).

Great post, I’m having this situation right now, as a experience Java Core developer im trying to move more to Web development trying to learn all popular frameworks plus other useful languages and is making me feel burned and unable to remember all. In my experience practice is the best way to persist all the knowledge in my brain but with so many options its difficult to focus in master one.

As a recent graduate with limited field experience, it’s hard to get a good job. Nowadays, employers need all-in-one package. They want a developer for example who knows HTML, CSS, Javascript, jQuery, ASP.NET, C#, ASP.NET MVC, Entity Framework and list just go on and on.. I am always confused that How I can excel these areas without having real-world experience? Definitely, I have little bit experience from all, but to master all means it’s really hard. Does Boot camp help with these problem? For example, one bootcamp teaches all new technologies and stacks for 9 Weeks (I always doubt that everything can be learned in 9 weeks) .

John, nice work again sir. Very much appreciate your insights. Its
easy to get lost in the sea of tech that there is out there. I try to
align my learning with my passions, setting my main focus on that and
then try to be productive in other technologies that I may be less
passionate about but that are still important to what I do as a
developer. I lose track of that sometimes though and it’s great to hear
someone at your level voicing similar opinions – gives me hope that I’m
on the right approach!

Pluralsight started making “Learning Paths” via blog posts, which is just a suggested order of courses to learn a particular technology.I’m thinking like more of a very general outline of concepts. You could build it out into things that exist in x number of languages, and then tree it out into language specific features.

I get lots of good contents from various sources like blogposts, news letters and emails etc. I would like to see my profile like “T” shaped. Last year or before that I came across ThoughWorks technology radar (http://www.thoughtworks.com/radar/#/). I liked their approach and I tried to adopt it for my learning. I focus on language/packages/tool which co-relates with my daily job. This is how I get into more detail aspect of specific language.
