You are right. It depends on the kind of thing you are building. If you are purely building software, automation is in software.

If you are building software and hardware, automated tests are a combination of software and physical automation.

The physical automation might not be possible, or cost effective, so it would have to be manual for those parts of the system.

You’ve never checked the money issued the ATM? Do you really trust in the whole process that it’s used to give your money just because it’s automated? I’m thinking in the simplest thing and considering that you’re right just in parts. Automation it’s needed but you need some end-to-end testing, even manually, except you also use a little machine to check the check the money the ATM gave you.
