This is absolutely true. One time I was working on rotating objects by dragging their corner with the mouse. It turned out to be much harder than I thought it would be. Now, this was before I took college-level math courses so I had to do quite a bit of research to get it to work and it ended up taking at least 3 times the time it should have taken. Had I known a bit more math back then, I would have known what to do, or even what terms to Google.

I think, that math knowledge in programming is like a talent. You could be successful and reach some goals in business without talent. But talent helps you do your business.

Most programming tasks will need only simple mathematics. Addition, subtraction and if you how to calculate 19% tax to a price, 99% of the needed skills in the daily routine are full filled.
If you want to develop games or applications with 3d graphics more knowledge is needed, but not more than that was teached in school.

But the way way to think to solve mathematic-problems will help you, to solve programming-problems, not the mathe it self.

Two things.

1) There is a great book about fundamental mathematics for programming http://www.amazon.com/Concrete-Mathematics-Foundation-Computer-Science/dp/0201558025

2) There are some things you *really* need the math for as you allude to. As an example building a compiler with a decent type system. Another example would be many graph algorithms. Without a mathematics background you will likely end up with solutions that are orders of magnitude slower. That said for crapping together a typical PHP app math doesn’t help much 🙂

Sort of; Church and Turing were attempting to solve the Entscheidungsproblem, posed by Hilbert in 1928. That’s also known as the decision problem. The origins of computer science are tightly bound to math and the philosophy of math, and a desire to prove that math was complete, i.e. you could derive all mathematical forums from a limited set of axioms. Godel proved that was impossible, and then Church and Turing came along and proved there are some problems we can’t solve. It’s not a big deal now, but during that time, it was shake up to many mathematicians and philosophers who want to believe that math was solid.

Back on topic, I think of this as one of those “you get what you give” topics. If you don’t want to learn math as a programmer, it will influence the type of jobs you get and you won’t get jobs that require a solid math understanding, so you won’t develop it, etc. If you don’t mind doing the “textbox over data” CRUD app all day, that’s fine, but that limits you where you can go in your job search. If you like working in a large corporation doing LOB apps, mastering CRUD apps is good, but if you want to work at a tech startup, or one of the more advanced tech corporations (Google, Microsoft, Jane Street), knowing the mathematical heart of computer science is important.

If you want more than that, if you want to work on more challenging systems, you’ll definitely need to learn some math.
