Nice article! (Technical) Debt 101 – You need something but can’t afford it, so you purchase it on credit with the understanding that:

a) You’ll need to pay back what your borrowed, with interest.
b) At some point you’ll hit your credit limit and won’t be able to borrow any more until you’ve paid down your debt.

I think the difference with software is you can quickly tack on rooms and duct tape structures onto the existing building, where in other disciplines you are dealing with the physical world, so it is not so easy. Of course, I am also of the mind that software development in general is not very closely related to engineering.

Why only the software industry is having this problem? Why other disciplines, like civil, mechanical, electrical, etc are immune to shoelaces untying and falling pants?

The phenomenon can be found in internal IT also. Those that dare to incorporate as many wishes from his boss as he can by writing crap code will sooner or later become your boss.

You’ve been spying on me! That describes my situation pretty close. Whats hard to do is to stop and tie your shoes when parents and friends (backers and clients) are screaming at you to keep going so they can win the race, um I mean so we can win the race. They picture you being this Olympic athlete, beautiful and graceful at every stride. They don’t want to know the truth and I don’t want them to know either.
