Entertaining. Sadly I work for a fed. gov’t. “non-profit” contractor that has scrum masters/managers (if you want to call ’em that) that are better at telling jokes and trying to make the BAs or “customers” laugh and keep things “good natured” than improving or enforcing our software development practices. They don’t have the cojones to say No. In that regard, our “trainers” are more of the type 1 described above. Here (elle am eye) he who controls the coin purse controls. Period.

After all, in both fitness and software product delivery we’re dealing a lot with human nature.

I’d suggest though, that the non-technical practices Scrum alone is the equivalent of just going on a diet. It will provide benefits – reduced weight, some increased energy – but the rate of failure, i.e. falling off the diet and back to old habits, is relatively high. That’s why there are so many fad diets around.

The “personal trainer” aspect is more like a team that has also committed to improving their technical practices, including full automated testing, continuous integration, pair programming, etc. They’re on a diet AND they’re working on full lifestyle changes including exercise.
