I like your idea of never doing ONE of a thing. I need to start adopting that myself. Also, the idea of dedicating an entire day to marketing is something I will try as well.

This video – on batching – hits to the heart of any small biz owner, but especially to that of the programmer. We, by nature, would like to believe that what matters in a software business is the programming; and just the programming. IOW, if I produce great software I MUST succeed.

Of course, nothing could be farther from the truth.

The most successful software companies (or any other company, for that matter), succeed more based upon their marketing than they do the quality of the product. I could go so far as to say that a mediocre product offering with great marketing will probably get one farther than a great product and little or no marketing.

As a developer, this doesn’t set well with me (and probably not with many others either). Unfortunately, this is reality.

All this being said, the marketing (i.e. blog posts, YouTube videos, mass emails, etc.) are often relegated to the “when I get the time” category. Your idea for “batch production” is a great way to schedule things so that they get done. Example: Mondays are when I get things done. I write blog posts, send out emails, prepare for my next show, etc. The entire day is dedicated to marketing and related things.

One thing I have recently begun is to install a simple rule: Never do ONE of a thing; do at least TWO. IOW, if I am writing an email for sending to my list, I don’t write one, I write at least two. Same with BlogTakRadio or videos. That way I begin building up a “next-one-is-in-the-can” queue.
