1. Stop Wasting Time

What if you could reclaim that time and use it to finish your coding projects more quickly?

Procrastination can happen for different reasons. But in the end it comes down to pushing through The Resistance (as Steven Pressfield calls it) and working on your stuff no matter how you feel.

You commit yourself to it, but after a while, you say “Well, this one is actually not so urgent; I’ll get back to it later.” Then you start doing something easier because you’re mentally drained.

After a few hours, you go back to the committed task, but you feel absolutely puzzled because you don’t remember what you were supposed to do. This means you now need to take some extra time to get back on track.

This is an example of context switching and is something that can lose you a lot productivity as a programmer.

A study conducted by the American Psychology Association reveals that shifting between tasks creates mental blocks that can cost 40% of your productivity.

3. Laser-Focus Your Efforts with WIP Limits

Work-in-Progress limits will help you fight overwhelm and ensure higher quality work.

If you have multiple projects in the pipeline, and you need to wait for something for Project A, it could be tempting to start on Project B. But in the end, this will lead to you working on all projects at once: You’ll constantly be task-switching.

To prevent productivity snags from happening, you should limit the number of work items you’re handling at once.

Limiting work in progress has the potential to speed up your work by slowing yourself down.

If you’re able to process four tasks in the span of three days, then your WIP limit would be four for that specific time period. From here, you can use the information as a rule of thumb and prevent overburdening yourself.

4. Take Control with Management Tools that Fit Your Work

Being stuck in problem-solving is the most common cause of unhappiness in developers, reported by 186 participants.

Time pressure came in at number two, with 152 participants reporting it as something that makes them unhappy at work.

You can relieve this pressure by scheduling your tasks and managing your time well.

The Pomodoro method is simple.

You set up a timer that has dedicated work sessions and dedicated rest sessions. The basic setting is 25 minutes work to five minutes rest. Totalling up to a half-hour period. You finish four 30-minute cycles and then take a long break and start over.

The Pomodoro method is the best for coders who have a hard time focusing on their work or are trying to get into a good work pace to meet a deadline, with dedicated rest to avoid burning out. You can completely optimize the time periods to fit your work.

6. Use Code Snippets

As a beginner programmer, I’d advise you to try and write all your code yourself – to make sure you’ve learned how to do it. If you’re already proficient though, there’s no harm in going to Google, finding other people’s code snippets, and including them in your programs.

You can speed up the process so much if you do that. Of course, we’re talking about copying snippets here, not whole programs. And always make sure you understand what you just copied.

You – or others using your code – should be able to come back to it and still be able to make sense of it all.

7. Avoid Code Clutter

To build on that argument, following clean code principles in your work will also make you more productive: 

  • You’ll waste less time sifting through messy code 
  • You won’t have as many bugs to fix 
  • You’ll finish each program more quickly and be ready for the next – with less stress 

8. Use the Best Software Tools

Get the best productivity-boosting software tools for coders to help yourself work faster and more efficiently. An example would be the Silver Searcher, an app to help you sift through code.

Developing software to its deployment can be a complex process with lots of single tasks. For most of these tasks, tools exist to batch them or otherwise make them require less effort. 

If you want to be more productive when developing software, these can be a godsend.

9. Learn to Type Lightning Fast

When you’re a fast, efficient typist, you spend less time between thinking that thought and expressing it in code.

Get the code out of your brain faster. Produce more code in less time. If you’re not a fast touch typist yet, it could pay off to work on that.

10. Detox from Digital Distractions

If you often find yourself losing focus and opening random websites or social media apps – block those while you’re working on your project. Focus on your work as much as you can. Take care of your fitness as a developer, and you’ll gain the mental clarity to solve tough problems, the energy for long coding sessions, and the strength to sit pain-free for many hours if you need to.

13. Avoid Burnout

In your quest to be as productive as possible, don’t run yourself into the ground. Follow the tips we laid out – scheduling your tasks, setting limits, killing energy drains, and taking enough breaks – and you’ll stave off developer burn out.

Caveat: If your workload isn’t huge, but you still have zero motivation for weeks on end, the issue isn’t with the amount of work, but maybe with the type of project or job you’re working right now.

If you’re a software developer? You’ve picked an awesome profession.

There’s so much growth to be had as a programmer. You can make great money either just coding or being a software engineer. Your options are limitless. 

But… that wealth of options can also be overwhelming. 

Where do you even start?

Problem #1: You don’t know which goals to set in the first place as a developer

There’s different directions you can go in with your goals. 

And there’s different types of goals. 

  1. Language goals 
  2. Career goals 
  3. Personality goals 
  4. Money goals…

Which goals make most sense for you to set? 

Which can you realistically achieve? 

Which should you attack right now – and which should you leave for later?

Which goal will get you the most money and success when you achieve it?

Problem #2: ‘Programmer Goal Overload’ has you confused and unfocused

Are you suffering from too many goals at once – a.k.a. Goal Overload?

My goal here is to give you some structure. So you can pick the right goals. 

So you’ll actually achieve them.

It’s fun to think about all the possible goals and fantasize how great it would be to achieve them.

But if you can never give enough focus to any one of those goals –  because Goal Overload has you stuck – how does it help you to keep thinking about every potential goal out there?

Goals are great, though. I’ve successfully used goal-setting to achieve a bunch of stuff:

  • Code apps
  • Write books
  • Create courses
  • Build websites
  • Become fit, healthy & wealthy

Your success as a programmer – whether it be becoming a software engineer in the first place, moving up the career ladder, writing the best code, making lots of money – I want to help make all of that simple for you. 

You start by mastering setting goals the right way. 

Let’s dive in.

The 4 Pillars of Powerful Programmer Goals: The Fulfilling Future Exercise, Infinite Improvement, The Non-Stop Value Formula, Powerful Habits

How do you advance your career most effectively? You do that by first setting goals that make sense for where you’re at and where you want to go.

Here are the 4 types of goals you need to have for maximum impact, money, and happiness as a programmer:

1. The Fulfilling Future Exercise

The key to success in life is to be fulfilled with the work you’re doing each and every day. 

Do you get excited about writing gaming code for 8-10 hours on a Monday and then repeating it for the next four days? Or are you passionate about the thought of working on machine learning systems at Amazon?

What type of work (that you’ve had a taste of, or KNOW it would be perfect for you) excites you the most?

Visualize your ideal life as a programmer

You’re spending most of your working day doing your favorite activities. Of course even those aren’t 100% enjoyable. They might be quite tough actually. But they allow you to express your gift, have maximum impact, and give you long-term fulfillment.

After you’ve created the idea of your optimal developer lifestyle, strive to get closer to it every day. Set intermediate goals on the way there. Pick tasks that’ll move you towards your vision. Reject those that pull you away from it. 

Use the 80-20 rule.

“Am I doing the 20% of tasks that are getting me closer to my goal?”

Focus on those and you’ll get 80% of the results – by only doing what matters. You’ll also make sure you’re 100% on the right track. So you’re not climbing a ladder, only to find out it was leaning against the wrong wall all along.

Instead, your actions will be perfectly aligned with fulfillment and success.

Finally, live each day as much as you can as if your goal had already come true. 

That’s how you’ll speak into existence your vision of your most fulfilling life as a software developer.

2. Infinite Improvement

When doing your goal-setting, don’t just focus on the outcome: As in, ‘I want to create an amazing tool that helps thousands of people and makes me millions of dollars.’

Also set goals for leveling up your skills. Because that’s when one leads to the other

If you’re so competent and complete as a programmer that you can:

  • tackle tough coding problems without flinching
  • strategize masterfully
  • present yourself, communicate & negotiate like a pro

that’s when you’ll be able to actually achieve those awesome high-level goals. 

Because you’ve turned yourself into the kind of person who does. 

Work towards improving your skills, and with each passing day you’ll be inching closer to your goals.

3. The Non-Stop Value Formula

The vision, the skills… those are important to focus on when setting your goals as a programmer.

What else is? Having a positive impact on others.

Setting goals that impact others is not altruistic. It’s selfish – because it’ll accelerate your own success as a developer. You’ll get better skills, more exposure and higher status, faster. The money will soon follow.

So how do you set goals that impact others?

You do it by staying connected to the real world while you’re building yourself up. 

  • Build stuff in public.
  • Have people actually use it.
  • Help others with any new programming skill you’re learning
  • Apply your new soft skills to give valuable presentations. 
  • Put your coding skills to the test by working with others on their projects. 

Impactful goals are those that have you connect and contribute – as opposed to goals about making you better in isolation. 

The latter are much easier to quit on as well.

4. Powerful Habits

Break your programming goals down into weekly & daily goals – because habits are more powerful than goals.

Once you’ve created those productive habits, achieving your long-term goals is as simple as executing those habits day after day. 

Luckily, while it’s hard work to first establish a new habit, it gets easier over time to keep them going. That’s the power of habits – use it to turn achieving your goals into a simple, repeatable process. 

You’ll finally feel that your goals are within your reach.

5 SMART Programmer Goals Examples – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant & Time-Bound

Smart GoalsFor any new goal it’s best if you follow the SMART goal setting formula

And to write them down. By writing down your goals, you have a 42% better chance of achieving them.

SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. 

A SMART goal is a really specific way of writing down your goal, a key component of improving your chances of achieving any goal.

Which one is a SMART goal?

  1. I want to work out more.
  2. I will go to the gym three times per week for the next six months.

It’s the second one. 

This goal gives a clear breakdown of what you’ll do, how you’ll do it, and over what time period.

Just saying you want to work out more doesn’t give you any idea about how you intend to do it. And most importantly it doesn’t hold you accountable.

You could work out for five minutes, one day of the week, and if that’s more than what you are currently doing, it’s technically achieving your goal.

However, it’s probably not going to get you the desired outcome of why you want to work out more.

Now that we know what a SMART goal is, let’s look at 5 SMART goals you can set to become a better programmer this year:

SMART Goal #1: Spend Three Nights per Week Creating Your Own Website if You Want To Make a Career Change

If you’re currently employed but looking to branch out on your own and build your own programming business, it’s great to have your own programming blog showcasing your skills.

You’ll need to dedicate some time after work to specifically work on the site and commit to a time-frame where you will have it done.

S—The goal is to build a website

M—Three nights per week

A—A challenge, but easily doable

R—Relevant if you want to start your own business

T—Three months

SMART Goal #2: Take an Online Course for a Specific Programming Language Twice per Year

If you’re a competent Java programmer, you could look to broaden out your skillset by learning a new programming language. A great way to do this is to commit to doing some online courses to improve your knowledge. 

Online courses are something that we think about doing but never really commit to.

Set a goal to do two per year. And a top tip is to find one that you need to pay for, as you’re much more likely to commit to it.

You can decide on any programming language in which you think you need to improve your skillset.

S—The goal is to learn a new programming language

M—Two courses that I pay for

A—Challenging but attainable

R—Relevant if you to build your programming skills

T—One year

SMART Goal #3: Spend Five Hours a Week Learning How To Develop a New App Over the Next Six Months

Building a new app takes time, and if it’s not your full-time job, it can be hard to find the time needed to work on it. 

However, taking the time to learn how to build a new app broadens your programming skillset and will make you more valuable to employers and clients.

Set yourself a goal that over the next six months you will spend five hours every week working on your new app.

This is a SMART goal where you can adjust parts to make them more relevant to you. 

For example, if you know you can easily work for five hours a week, increase it to 10. Or if you think it will only take you three months to develop, shorten the time frame.

S—The goal is to develop an app

M—Five hours per week

A—Hard but doable

R—Relevant if you want to build a new app

T—Six months

Smart Goal #4: Dedicate Two One-Hour Blocks of Time To Increase Productivity Every Day for Three Months

Spend TimeProgramming requires intense concentration. If there are lots of distractions going on, properly focusing on the work you need to do can be really hard, and productivity can drop.

In Cal Newport’s bestseller, Deep Work, he suggests one of the best ways to concentrate on your work is to block out times to do specific intense work. This is a time where you just work on a specific task you have set yourself. For example, if you need to write code for a specific part of a website you’re developing, you do that, and only that, for the one-hour time block.

Turn off your phone, close down your emails, and avoid the internet if you can. Schedule an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon for periods of intense focus. The reason for choosing an hour is it’s long enough to really focus and get plenty done, but short enough to not be intimidating from the start.

Again, this part of the SMART goal can be reframed to suit you better. If you know you concentrate better for shorter periods of time, reduce the time period. Twenty-five minutes can be a good place to start; that’s the time frame used in the Pomodoro productivity technique.

You’ll be surprised at how much you get done.

S—The goal is to do intense work

M—Two one-hour blocks every day

A—Challenging but doable

R—Relevant if wanting to increase your productivity

T—Three months

SMART Goal #5: Spend One Hour at the End of the Month To Plan Your Time for the Following Month

Plan Your WeekAs the saying goes: “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.” Plan out your month and you’ll get dramatically more done each month.

Most successful people in the world will plan out their months ahead of time so they know exactly what they need to do to achieve their goals.

Give yourself an hour at the end of each month to plan what you intend to do for the upcoming month. 

This can involve looking at what key tasks you need to complete, blocking out time to get them done, and making a to-do list of the less urgent tasks.

Also, use this time to refer back to your goals to make sure you are making progress toward them every month.

S—The goal is to plan for the month ahead

M—Once a month

A—Easily attainable

R—Relevant if wanting to be more organized

T—One month

Short Term Programmer Goals

1. You’ll make your own learning curriculum

This is where you make sure you’ll progress towards your goals. If you fail to do this, it’s too easy to get lost and abandon one, multiple or even all of your goals. 

You can’t just set goals by themselves. You need to outline exactly how you’ll get there.

So, set aside a number of hours per week that you’ll dedicate to learning. Pick a number of hours you know you’ll be able to hit. Don’t go overboard! 

Now, decide which resources you’ll use during those hours, and how you’re going to study them – for example by thinking about a problem, sketching it out, writing and debugging the code, documenting your results in a written report, etc.

2. You’ll create a weekly & daily schedule

For every activity that’s important to your programming career, outline it in a similar way.

Figure out what needs to happen each week to keep you chipping away at your goals.

Then, break it down even further: Into little chunks of work you can put into a daily list of tasks. Now you just need to focus on completing your daily schedule. 

And you’ll automatically get closer to your goals as a developer.

3. You’ll start your portfolio website

Never underestimate the power of your portfolio. 

Build stuff you can be proud of. Doesn’t matter what. A blog website, photo slider, Web Scrapper. To-Do app, Resume portfolio, etc.

Once a client sees your portfolio and the amount of stuff you’ve built, is when he knows what you’re capable of. Your work speaks for itself.

4. You’ll take on a freelance coding project to develop yourself and make extra income

Now you’re getting paid to learn! 

And after you’re done, you can add the completed project to your portfolio.

5. You’ll give a talk on a technical topic you’re passionate about 

You can do this at any meetup, conference or event. You’ll gain communication skills, get your name out among potential collaborators or employers, and gain that momentum to keep taking your programming career to the next level.

6. You’ll write a valuable article or report that people love to share

For some, this can launch them into a completely new career outlet: Writing for a living. 

If your article was a hit, why not expand on it and make it into a whole book? Today, with how easy it is to self-publish a book, the world could be your oyster.

7. You’ll study one new coding book

You don’t need to read all the books. But studying just one book deeply can take your programming skills to a whole new level.

Again, you’ll set aside an amount of hours to dive into the knowledge and solve the problems presented in the book. If you do this, you’ll get a hundred times more value out of it than if you were to simply read through dozens of books.

In the article on top programming books, you’ll find a good selection of books. Pick one that sounds like an exciting challenge for you to tackle. 

Commit to that and see how your coding skills benefit.

8. You’ll upgrade your debugging skills

Set a goal to get better at debugging this year. 

Vow to approach every bug with a formula:

  1. Hypothesize: Where do you think the problem could lie? 
  2. Experiment to prove or disprove your hypothesis
  3. Repeat until you’ve found the bug

Optimizing your debugging process could be a worthy goal for you as a programmer – it’ll make you more effective at churning out functional code, in a repeatable manner, more quickly.

9. You’ll get better at project-based interviewing

If you’re looking to find work as a software developer, get ready to crush those project-based interviews.

Make a goal to thoroughly research the interview process and topics, to tackle a number of new programming interview questions each day, and to frequently hold mock interviews with your friends.

You want to get to a point where you can easily solve most of those Leetcode-style questions thrown at you. 

That’s when it becomes only a matter of time until you’ll be getting a highly paid programming job.

10. You’ll start doing soft skills challenges

Programmers with good soft skills are invited for more projects, rise up higher in their company, get more recognition, and overall become more successful, wealthy and happy.

So install the worthy goal of improving those skills. 

Turn it into a challenge: 

  • How many new people can I reach out to this week? 
  • When can I practice and deliver an impactful speech in front of people? 
  • How will I start negotiating like a pro to get what I want during my next meeting?

11. You’ll gather at least one new piece of feedback each week

Most programmers fail to achieve their goals because they don’t even know what they’re doing wrong.

When it comes to our work, we all have blind spots. It’s just human.

Those who can rise above their ego, ask their peers or higher-ups for honest feedback, and accept and implement it, are the ones who’ll become successful.

12. You’ll improve your problem-solving skills

“The biggest mistake I see new programmers make is focusing on learning syntax instead of learning how to solve problems.” – V. Anton Spraul

Set a goal to solve one new problem each week. It’ll help if you pick different platforms to solve problems on. 

Create and improve on your problem-solving framework: The system you use to assess, structure, and ultimately overcome every problem. 

Soon enough you’ll be able to use this system with every challenge you face, be it related to programming or not.

Long Term Programmer Goals

13. You’ll create a personal brand

Want to rise up the ranks as a programmer – make better connections, get better jobs, multiply your income? 

Start building your personal programmer brand ASAP.

  • Let people know which area you’re specializing in as a developer
  • Write your biographical elevator pitch: Who are you and how are you helping me?
  • Create your portfolio website
  • Build your LinkedIn profile
  • Start sharing content around your area of expertise
  • Join a community – or start your own!

Once people know you as an expert on their topic, they’ll start coming to you with offers.

Building a personal brand is a proven way to rise above the masses as a programmer and snatch the best opportunities. 

14. You’ll learn a new language (one at a time!)

A classic goal for any developer is to learn a new programming language. And the best way to do it is strategically. 

Pick ONE language at a time. Conservatively estimate how long it’ll take you to learn it. Create a weekly schedule. Purchase any resources if necessary. 

Follow through with your daily learning habit, and soon you’ll have achieved your goal.

Professional Goals for Software Engineers & Developers

15. You’ll complete a new certification

Courses, bootcamps and certifications can be a quick way to level up your programming skills and increase your professional status at the same time.

You could set a goal to complete one or two new of these per year.

Over time, this will put you in the upper echelon of developers in terms of coding knowledge, skills and accolades.

If you’re at a job, put that professional development budget to good use and have them pay for any cert or course you take.

16. You’ll prepare for & apply to your dream job

Two things separating you from your dream job as a programmer: You need to set a smart goal to actually go for that job, and then do the work to make that goal come to fruition.

If you have a strategic plan for getting there, and you’re executing on that plan – it’s only a matter of time until you’ll get that job.

17. You’ll take responsibility for one new project at work

If you want to increase your influence at work and climb the ladder – set a ‘leadership goal’ specifying how you’ll start a new project, and collaborate with others to make it succeed, creating a positive impact in your company.

19. You’ll start investing your money into assets

Once you make good money as a programmer, a worthwhile goal is to start putting any extra money to work for you.

A great way to do that is to invest into assets.

I’ve made great money investing in real estate, but you could choose other assets to invest in as well, like businesses or websites.

Make a goal to set X amount aside each month to put into new assets. Once these assets start paying you back without much upkeep, you’ll be glad you did!

20. You’ll apply for a raise each year, citing your accomplishments

If you’re someone who sets and achieves new goals every year? Then you keep increasing your value for the company you’re working for: 

  • Those difficult jobs you finished.

As we speak, tens of thousands of companies are developing mobile apps, and even more startups and appreneurs are seeking funds to get their app projects off the ground. Yet only a few app ideas manage to win a VC’s attention.

“VCs invest in only one of the three hundred enterprises they are exposed to,” writes Jeffery Bussgang, author of Mastering the VC Game. They’re looking for deals that are as rare as a four-leaf clover.

As a result, VCs say “no” more than “yes” to pitches. According to the most recent Crunchbase data, global venture capital funding fell to $39 billion in May 2022, the lowest level in more than a year.

So, if you have a set business plan, you must rightly wonder how to structure a pitch that would attract the attention of a venture capitalist. Worry not! In this post I’ll show you how to support your idea and greatly increase your chances of getting noticed, by following the tactics below.

Fake It Until You Make It

An initial meeting with a VC may simply last 30 minutes—long enough for them to assess your passion, attitude, and personality. According to Bussgang, the first 15 minutes are critical, and the entrepreneur must be able to establish credibility and relevance within that time frame.

Moreover, as Venture Deal authors Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson mention, terms like “trying to raise money,” “testing the waters,” and “exploring other choices” should be avoided when pitching your idea. Feld and Mendelson comment that “Such phrases smell of uncertainty; thus, businesses should begin with an optimistic mindset that assumes success.”

Once the partners have given your pitch some thought, and if they find it fascinating, a second meeting is scheduled wherein the VCs will come prepared with some follow-up questions and concerns regarding your pitch.

Remember that entrepreneurship is associated with failures, and having the appropriate mindset can help you get through most of them. But, before you are ready to fake it, you need to get everything else within the creation of the app sorted so that you can fake it with some well-founded knowledge and skill. Timelines and financials, for example.

Chart out Timelines and Detailed Financials

VCs would want to know how long each stage of your app development would take to complete. They’ll want to know how long it’ll take you to deliver your MVP if you’re starting from the ground up. How many iterations are in the works? How much would the monthly expense be until you break even?

Most VCs are concerned with two things:

  • the revenue drivers that will help your app startup reach a break-even point;
  • monthly cash consumption.

Even if you know your business better than them, VCs will utilize their experience to determine how well you understand the financial aspects of your company.

The point is: Know every number and every detail of your app inside out before you enter a VC’s office.

Check out the financial features of a mobile app called Fit Strong for better understanding. Fit Strong creators intended to raise $345,000 in debt financing, with the majority of the funds going toward mobile app development, promotion, and photography. A portion of the money was also set aside for social media advertising and commercial airtime.

Likewise, it may be good to build multiple financial model scenarios (worst vs. base vs. best case) and check for common financial modeling problems for startups. Instead of presenting a VC with an overly optimistic or unattractive case, creating many scenarios and completing sanity checks will help you get closer to a realistic case since it is evident you are a reliable investment.

The Finances and VC Connection Matter

When obtaining funds for your app, one of the most common mistakes entrepreneurs can make is focusing on the wrong investors.

First and foremost, figure out how much money you want to raise before you begin, because if you don’t, you will end up barking at the wrong tree.

According to Feld and Mendelson, if you need $500,000 in seed financing, you should first contact angel investors, super angels, seed-stage VCs, micro VCs, and early-stage investors before addressing large VC firms.

Suppose you need to finance $10 million; in that case, you should start pursuing larger venture capital firms because you’ll need a lead investor willing to (and financially able to) sign a $5 million check.

Substance over Style

pitch a venture capitalistDon’t over-design your data. VCs are not really fond of highly stylized summaries; instead, they prefer clear, concise, exciting information that can be easily processed at home or in the office.

To prepare a perfect pitch, have a short description of your app startup ready, along with an executive summary and a presentation. Let’s break down what this means for what you need to do a little more.

The short description, also known as the elevator pitch, could be one to three paragraphs that directly describe the app, the team, and the business. The concluding paragraph could be the next step you plan to undertake.

Here’s an elevator pitch example of JustPark, a parking app, which caught the attention of Richard Branson.

“Let’s face it. Parking can be a real nightmare. It can be infuriating to find, extremely pricey and by the time you find that spot you would have lost time, petrol, and caused a lot of unnecessary traffic and pollution. Well, there’s an answer; parkatmyhouse.com. We are an awesome little company, backed by an awesome big company called BMW. Now, listen in: You can reserve parking in a private property and save up to 70%. Need to park at a sports match or local station? Sorted. … Just go to parkatmyhouse.com and simply type in where you want to park and what dates. It is that simple.”

An executive summary is critical, since it may be the most widely distributed document in a venture capital firm. It can be 1-3 pages long, and it should include a detailed description of the app, the problem you want to answer, and why it is vital to solving.

The big question to answer is: What makes your app stand out from the competitors’, and why is your team the best match to pursue it?

Be sure to add high-level financial data to show that you have lofty but realistic expectations for your company’s long-term success. Additionally, have it proofread by third parties to ensure that all-important aspects are addressed. Remember, presentations could make or mar a funding event… So make it count.

The presentation is a visual representation of your executive summary that would include more examples and a detailed explanation of your company. The length is typically 10-20 slides, depending on the audience. The scale of your presentation may need to adapt depending on whether you are pitching to a single investor, a partnership business, or an investment event.

Furthermore, some VCs would love to see a business plan, though these days most of them tend to ignore it. A business plan is an extension of your executive summary. It could be 30 pages long with complete details on the app, target market, customers, team, and even financials. Though considered an obsolete document because of its length, the idea of putting down your thoughts on paper will stand you in good stead in the future.

Due Diligence

Due Diligence is yet another essential criterion for seed funding. Meeting the due diligence objective as per potential investor requirements is one of the best ways to accelerate and complete the seed funding process.

As part of the due diligence process, the investors check your finances, legal documents, key personnel, employment contracts, vendors, clients, and more to determine their accuracy based on which funds would be released.

Besides looking to gain a complete financial analysis of your company, VCs will conduct a background check on all the founders, board members, and key company personnel.

You must deliver the due diligence documents before looking to raise funds, specifically if you are an app start-up. Otherwise, the investment process can be slowed.

Pro tip: Do not hide anything from the VCs because your relationship will suffer if they get a whiff of something you didn’t want them to smell in the first place.

Build a Prototype

Some venture capitalists prefer to see a demo of a prototype over a business plan or financial information, especially when the company is still in its early stages and they want to get a better picture of the concept you are creating. Not only do you get to inform the VCs about the challenges your app will solve, but you also get to tell them about your app’s benefits while they’re actively looking at your prototype.

Here’s what a prototyping process looks like for an app:

  1. Identify the key functionalities
  2. Make sketches of primary screen
  3. Turn sketches into wireframes
  4. Turn wireframes into prototype

And, yes, VCs won’t mind if the MVP is lacking in features or crashes during the presentation, because they understand that the app is still in development and will require multiple tweaks from the app developer before it meets market demand. In short, the most effective way to determine VCs’ interest is through a prototype of your app. For starters, use X-code for prototyping.The platform enables in building prototypes, akin to real apps, by making use of fake data and placeholder content.

Don’t Overpromise

Overpromise, overdeliver, says Grant Cordone—a real-estate mogul, motivational speaker, and best-selling author. Maybe that’s the success recipe for Cardone, but, generally speaking, it’s always better to underpromise and admit the risks involved.

Due to paranoia, Christoph Westphal of Sirtris always avoided overpromising his vision. “Odds are you’re going to lose this money,” Christoph allegedly warned one of his investors. But it was this openness that put him at ease with investors.

VCs are well aware of the dangers that come with starting a business; all they want to know is whether you are aware of them or not.

Reid Hoffman, founder, and chairman of LinkedIn, warns against overpromising during the pitching process. As he comments, “You may say to the venture capitalist, ‘I’m going to be able to do this, this, and this.’ But you’re gambling into the future, you don’t really know that you’ll get there.”

The Bottomline: Don’t oversell. Only 1-2 percent of the 5,000 business proposals Hoffman examined as a VC in the last few years performed better than their plans. Accept that it’s a gamble. It’s a risk.

Know Your VC Audience

Just because you have an out-of-this-world app idea up your sleeve—one that might address a smoldering problem head-on and usher in radical solutions—doesn’t mean the VCs will fall hook, line, and sinker for it and release funds without raising a finger.

VCs want a clear-cut view of all the financials, executive summaries, presentations, MVPs, and more.

They like to play with the MVP component in particular. Moreover, it would be best to admit the odds at stake, which might make or break up your startup experiment.

In short, be ready to be grilled and be honest. Most VCs are seasoned investors who know when the iron is hot.

As a developer, you have most likely faced a situation where you had to dramatically accelerate the work speed in order to complete the project on time, risking professional burnout. The truth is that nowadays the ever-growing development speed has become a topical issue not only for game dev and startups but also for enterprise solutions.

Indeed, in the World Quality Report 2020-21, Capgemini states that about 70% of development teams work under pressure, deploying products daily and hourly. But how can this be done with no harm to quality?

That’s precisely what I’ll show you in this post, so that you can be faster than your competitors without sacrificing quality, all while you avoid professional burnout.

Some Words on Development Speed

In software development, speed is not a simple concept; after all, the definition of speed itself may vary depending on the perspective.

For instance, with Agile development, some experts describe the concept of speed in terms of various patterns. On a basic level, these patterns are represented by such units as a sprint (extreme and moderate), a marathon, and an interval. Let’s look at each of these speed patterns in more detail—eventually this will help you choose the one that is most relevant to your specific needs.

Extreme Sprint

Extreme sprint is a speed pattern that best suits some critical situations—for instance, when there is quality loss, unhappy customers, or similar things requiring immediate attention. When working in the extreme sprint, the team puts aside all additional tasks and reduces the work in progress (WIP) for each of the development stages. This helps to lower multitasking and focus on the specific problem, thus finding the ways to resolve or mitigate it.

The main disadvantage of the extreme sprint mode is that it is too difficult to implement and maintain continuously. It’s like a demolition derby with developers working extremely long shifts (over 10 hours), which may take a toll on their productivity and health, cause them to experience daily burnout, and consequently, reduce the quality of their work.

Such an approach to speed can hardly be a long-term strategy in any company, because it makes the development process too unpredictable and unreliable.

Moderate Sprint

The moderate sprint is another modification of the sprint pattern. Despite its name, it nonetheless remains dangerous and unstable regarding project management. Here, we won’t see extreme overwork. Developers work regular eight-hour shifts and try to use their productivity to the fullest with minimal disruptions. In other words, coding is the only thing they do to increase work production.

However, over time this may also become a problem. The reason is that in such working conditions, when the developers’ focus is limited only to coding, productivity inevitably drops, and no one may even notice that something is wrong.

This lack of reflection is due to the team members working like hamsters in a wheel and doing the same routine tasks day after day. At a certain point, team members begin to burn out and work unenthusiastically, which inevitably affects the quantity and quality of the performed tasks.

Unfortunately, teams can work in such an ineffective mode for a very long time; in the long run, it may dramatically reduce the ROI of the entire software development project. After all, it may take up to several months or even years just to identify and acknowledge the problem.

As a result, though moderate sprints may still be effective if they are used in just a pinch, they are not a sustainable long-term strategy.

Marathon

Unlike sprint modes with their extremes, the marathon speed pattern relies on evenness and endurance for the sake of long-term sustainability. The key idea is to balance between high productivity and the highest speed possible without compromising developer creativity and morale.

In this speed mode, teams work regular shifts and have time to solve complex tasks—or just stop and think. Is it an ideal speed pattern? It is. Although it can hardly ever be found in real-life practice.

Be as it may, in such a relaxed mode, the risk of being outperformed by competitors runs high. After all, while your teams are spending time planning, hypothesizing, or meeting, your competitors release new features or releases, attract new users, and increase profits.

To mitigate the collective downsides of the above speed patterns, we can make the more effective and logical choice—to utilize the interval mode, which combines all patterns described above.

Intervals as an Optimum

Don’t limit the team to a certain pace, but instead make use of the best features of all the speed patterns. The interval speed mode makes use of sprints and marathon runs with regard to the team’s priorities and challenges at a given project stage.

Given all of the above points on patterns, intervals can be one of the most optimal speed modes, regardless of the scale and complexity of your software development process.

Here is an example of a potential combination of several speed modes within one interval. These sprints and marathons should follow each other, with the cycle ideally repeating over and over again:

  • A speedy sprint. In this mode, the team performs WIP and puts all additional activities—such as meetings, learning sessions, or company events—on hold. For example, you know you know a lot and have the scars to prove it, but the rest of the world doesn’t acknowledge it. If only they could look inside your brain and figure out what you are worth.

I wish that were so. This blog post will talk about sharing your learnings, when to share, where to share, and how you might turn those learnings into more significant earnings both as products you can sell or as space to sell advertising.

Why Share

Why is sharing your learning important?

First, it reinforces your learning. Before you can explain something to someone else, you have to make sure it’s straight in your head. Stickiness is great in case you have to respond to a technical question at the team building tiki bar.

Second, it allows you to provide value to others and position yourself as an expert. The people who are seen as experts earn more money.

When you can show others that you know what you are talking about, they are more likely to:

  • Pay attention to you
  • Value your opinion
  • Seek you out for advice and mentorship
  • Offer you opportunities
  • Promote your ideas

And finally, it’s a way of giving back to the community that has helped you so much. We have all been there, and someone helped us when we started, and now it’s our turn to help others. It feels good, and it’s the right thing to do.

Step One: Identify When You are Learning

The first step to translating your learning into earning is to realize you are learning. How many times a day do you have to look something up or work out a tricky problem? Each of these times is you learning something.

The main idea here is to be aware that you are learning. So, in the beginning, note it in your mind. In the book Atomic Habits, James Clear lets us know that we can start to build impressive habits by consistently doing the tiniest possible things first.

Throughout your day, look out for times when you:

  • Have an “Aha!” moment.
  • Think to yourself, “That’s funny.”
  • Look something up
  • Think to yourself, “Well, it works on my machine.”
  • Work out a tricky problem
  • Discuss with a co-worker on solving an issue
  • Tell someone else how to do something you just learned

Each of these times, note it’s something you learned. Then, if you can get in the habit of recognizing when you are learning, you can start to take action and turn that learning into earning.

Earnings: Very little as all this is happening in your head.

Step Two: Capture Your Learning

After you have developed a habit of acknowledging when you have learned something, start keeping notes on what you learned. Jot down the problem and how you solved it, so you don’t forget later.

Keeping notes has three benefits:

  1. It reinforces the learning for you immediately. Reinforcement means you are less likely to forget the solution, and in this way, you strengthen your knowledge.
  2. You have notes to allow you to reinforce your learning in the future. If this is a critical concept, you should place the idea in a Spaced Repetition System (SRS) like Anki.
  3. You have a reminder of things you have learned so you can share them publically later.

Once again, take this tiny step, and this step only, building on the previous phase of acknowledgment until you are consistently doing it over 2 weeks.

Earnings: Small. If you are only capturing it in a physical notebook it is the start of something you could turn into earnings, but you aren’t there yet.

Step Three: Share Your Learning In a Small Way

developer side hustleThe best way to start sharing in little ways is on a platform that constrains the size of what you can share, Twitter.

Twitter is the perfect platform for sharing little snippets of information, or what I like to call “micro-teaching.”

The next habit to build is to share one thing you learned on Twitter each day. Please take one of your notes, condense it into a Tweet, and put it there. Do this every day or every workday for a few weeks.

If you aren’t brave enough to expose your ignorance to the world (guess what, everyone is ignorant of something), you can anonymously start a Twitter account and post there.

After a few weeks of this, you have built up a small but steady habit of sharing our learning with the world in a very low-risk way.

Earnings: Small to medium. You aren’t going to earn much, if anything, on Twitter but if you do this long enough you could position yourself as an expert and turn it into a new better fulfilling or paying job.

Step Four: Consolidate Your Sharing Into Something Larger

Next, you take one of our learning notes that is not condensible to a single Tweet and build it into a Tweet thread.

Or you could provide a summary of the previous 4 or 5 days of tweets if they are all related.

Let’s plan to do this once a week, in addition to our daily tweets.

Lists are great things to present in tweet threads. For example, think of the initial tweet as saying: “The X Best Tools for Y,” or “X Good Things and Y Bad Things about Product Z I Learned This Week.”

People like lists, it’s easy to get their head around, and it makes it easier for you to structure what you want to say. Making things easier for you to produce them means it’s more likely you will make these tweet threads a habit.

Another thread type is the “How-To.” These are more difficult to produce, but they provide immense value to your followers if you can make them a habit.

The last thread type is the story. If you have a good story related to your work or learning that would be interesting to others, share it! Stories are great because they are entertaining and provide a great way to share your learning in an easily digestible format.

The key with these thread types is to make sure you are providing value to your followers, not just promoting yourself or your product.

If you can do that, people will appreciate it, and you will build a following of engaged users who are happy to see your content.

As you can see, we have now built on the previous two habits to get to a point where we are sharing our learning with the world more substantially, once a week.

But it doesn’t stop there.

Earnings: Small to Medium. Still the same reasons as above, but showing people you are willing to work harder at sharing increases the chance of opportunities coming your way.

Step Five: Consolidate Your Consolidations to Something Larger Still

Now we can start to look at ways of turning our micro-learning into something that has more value.

The next step is to start writing articles. Article writing is a big one and will take some time to get used to, but it’s worth it. The main idea is to take one of your tweet threads, or a selection of them, and turn it into a longer article.

Articles are easier to build than you think, as you already have the content created. You need to expand on your tweets and tweet threads and link everything together.

Articles are a great way to share your learning in a more permanent format with the world. They also benefit from being easily shareable on social media and other platforms.

Suppose you can write one article per week, 52 articles per year! And if each of those articles helped just one person, that would be 52 people whose lives you have made a little bit better.

Think about how good that would make you feel in addition to who might get exposed to it and who might like your work enough to want to work with you via consulting, a job offer, writing a book together, or something else.

We want to build this habit of writing an article once a month to start and eventually bringing it down to once a week.

Where do you publish these articles?

Medium (Or Other Places)

Medium is a great place to start. You have a built-in audience, and if you start getting traction, you can redirect them to your blog (below).

The downside of Medium is they own the content, and they own your subscribers.

Other great places to post these are on sites like Hashnode, freeCodeCamp, and dev. These websites already have large audiences of developers interested in reading this type of content.

Posting on other people’s sites is a great place to start, but if you want long term control and success, you are going to have to:

Start A Blog

A personal blog is a great way to share your learning with the world more substantially.

Not only do you control everything, but you can also go as deep into topics as you like and show off what you know. There are no editors, no style guides, and no limits. There’s also little support. I only suggest this after you have developed the habit of writing regularly and have an audience willing to follow you.

It’s also a great way to build an audience of people interested in what you have to say.

WordPress.com is a great place to start if you want to go this route, as it’s free and easy to set up. You can get your domain and host for around $48/year if you want more control. There are lots of tutorials out there on how to get started blogging.

You can start earning money on your articles with affiliate marketing or ad revenue, but the real money comes in the next step.

Earnings: Medium to Large. Ad revenue and affiliate marketing can be very lucrative in the right niches and with the right programs.

Step Six: And To The Earnings

developer side hustleOnce you have gotten into the habit of writing articles, you can move on to even larger projects to share with others. At this point, it should be easy to take this next step. You have all the accumulated knowledge from the previous actions ready to package into a more extensive offering. The best part of this step is it is when you really start seeing the money. With all these things you can either sell them directly or generate ad revenue off of them.

Here are some ideas:

  • Write a book
  • Start a podcast
  • Make a video course
  • Create templates or project starters
  • Give a talk at a conference
  • Solo consulting
  • The world is your oyster!

Earnings: Large. In addition, a lot of these are passive income streams that allow you to continue learning and sharing and the cycle repeats itself.

Now You Know, So Go Share and Earn

Learning and sharing is the path I have chosen to greater financial freedom, and it’s the one I recommend you take as well.

The key is to get started and make sharing your learning a habit – that is, you do it consistently. Focus on habit building, small steps at a time, recognize you learned something, write it down, share it on Twitter, share longer Twitter threads, then write articles, and finally, start creating your own courses or products. The sooner you start, the sooner you will reap the rewards of greater earnings. Why are you waiting? Go out there and start sharing your excellent learning with the world!

Building a Community

Building a community seems pretty standard, even in Web2 models, but creating a healthy and active community is even more vital for small startups operating for Web3.

The reason is that a noteworthy Web3 app needs the support of actual people, not just clicks, traffic numbers, and perceived value. Your service needs to fill a need and be polished and user-friendly, but it needs to be exciting and engaging as well. Users must find a real reason to follow and support your Web3 project.

The best way to build some excitement and a like-minded group of enthusiasts around your product is to find the right voice. However, even more importantly, you need to find a way to explain the project’s value proposition in a simple manner. This message doesn’t have to be “salesy” or full of grand claims. The goal needs to be digestible and easily understood. Your messaging should strive to be something people can hold on to and rally around.

Traditional social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit are good places to start, but it’s important to direct your efforts to wherever it is people begin to actively discuss and engage with your project, wherever that might be.

Currently, Web3 is sort of an undefined thing.
