Oh yeah. Go and make a lot of money then. It’s not that hard to do. If you really think it will buy you ultimate happiness, there are plenty of ways to trade your current happiness for a large chunk of cash later down the road.

I have to agree. I’d already have spent a billion of it by now, and I would have enjoyed every second of it. Maybe money can’t buy *you* happiness, but I guarantee you’re doing it wrong. And one data point never established a trend before now, why would using Markus as an example be valid? Let me get $2.5B from Microsoft and I’ll show you how to buy happiness.

Hah, good comparison.

“Do you realize that 90% of the enjoyment
you get out of life will come from the hard work and only 10% from the
enjoyment of the rewards it brings?”

This is similar to reaching the level cap in WoW. You were psyched for a few moments, then you realized killing a mob was now worthless other than for loot or rep grind.

I still remember my road to my first level 60. Good times, good times. *sigh*

That is exactly why he is a perfect example. Because he was already screwed up and already had problems, you can see that money didn’t fix anything. Perhaps it just made things worse. (Most likely it did.)

Anyway, I get your point, but I’m just saying that you have to get your shit together first and then money is a resource to help you achieve more. But, if you think money will help you get your shit together, then you are in for a long bumpy trip.

I have been an avid player of “His” game for a long time. And having looked into him, I think it’s easy to see why he’s so unhappy. He backs away as soon as things start to go wrong, and he blames all the issue on his workers, while holding credit for everything Mojang did. In case you forgot, he sold his company after tweeting “[ I have no control over any of this, but am still getting yelled at. I may sell all my stock in the company.]” (Paraphrasing) He was the top guy in there, he could have changed any of it if he actually wanted to. But rather than being responsible and dealing with the issue, he claimed to hold no power and sold it and backed away. He is a coward. And I would be pretty unhappy with my life as well if I had chickened out like he did. I couldn’t imagine living life like that.

Also, more fuel for my hatred of him: He went to buy a mansion, and when being shown around, the sellers prepared him a meal costing THOUSANDS of dollars. To which he replied “I’d rather just order sushi”. If that wasn’t 1) Rude and 2) Cocky, I don’t know what is.

That is exactly the point. I earn decent money and I enjoy my job every day. And I would be doing programming even if I had billions in the bank, but probably on totally different subjects, that is would be my “freedom”. Concerning the “freedom buffer” to bail out of situations that become unpleasant, I also agree and I have always had the same philosophy, even if I am rather a sort of tree-hugger for what concerns jobs.

You will sleep a lot more peacefully when you know that you can always bail out of a shitty job and survive for half a year”. This is probably a point where you can find balance between leading the life you want and striving for the dream.

I really enjoy programming and tackling complex issues. I began programming when I was 14, in the “golden 80’s”, developing games in Z80 assembler (some of them even got published and provided a nice income!). Now I work for several customers, developing for the web, mobile, and business apps. And still love my job… but there is one single question that can spoil even the most interesting project. Is that awkward moment when your customer, after having agreed upon the requirements (maybe even about the budget) says “OK, then… when can you have it ready for us?”. Yes, deadlines. They mean you’ll be hacking day and night, doing all sorts of ugly things in order to meet the schedule (and despite that, you won’t). Then, those monday morning email/calls asking for progress reports, milestones and the like, from a PjM with no computing background who has read “Scrum for dummies” in a weekend and thinks he/she can lead a programming team. Does anyone know a cure for that?
