On 29 June 2026, a mass shooting occurred at a youth welfare center in Stade, Germany. Six people were killed and several others were injured.[1] Two people were arrested, including the alleged shooter.[2][3] The motive behind the shooting is under investigation.[4]

Background

[edit]

Germany has some of the strictest gun laws in Europe, and school shootings there are rare. Anyone under 25 is required to pass a psychological evaluation before getting a gun licence.[5]

Shooting

[edit]

The shooting took place in the group home section of a youth welfare facility for mothers and children in the city centre of Stade. Five people, identified as four women and one man,[6] were killed in the immediate aftermath. Less than ten[6] others were injured,[7] with some heavy injuries.[8][9] A sixth person died of their wounds at hospital.[10] Police arrived at the scene at around 12:10.[6]

Two people, a man, identified as the suspected shooter, and a woman, both above the age of 21,[11] fled the scene in a car, but were apprehended after police shot out one of their tires.[12] A third individual was detained on suspicion of involvement.[11] Investigators have ruled out organised crime,[13] political extremism, or femicide,[14] with Lüneburg police stating that the crime is suspected to have been an act of domestic violence (Beziehungstat [de]),[15] describing the shooting as an "extended familial tragedy [...] related to the periphery of the youth welfare facility".[14]
